STEPHEN HAAG
Stephen Robert Haag, 61, died Dec. 15, 2007, in Vancouver.
Haag was born Sept. 2, 1946, in Seaside, OR, and lived in Battle Ground for about 40 years. He had also lived in Alaska, Seattle, Mexico and the Washington coast.
Haag worked as a house builder and remodeler. He enjoyed working with wood and traveling.
Haag was preceded in death by his father, John Haag, in 1992, and sister Julie Haldeman in 2004. Survivors include mother Cora Haag of Battle Ground, brother Glenn Haag of Battle Ground, sister Leslie Thorson of Graham, and nieces and nephews.
No services are planned. Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN HAGER
John William Hager, 77, died Dec. 27, 2006, in La Center.
Hager was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Aliquippa, PA, and had lived in Texas and California before moving to Vancouver in 1986. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Burlington Northern Railroad for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army 1950-52. He enjoyed yard work, flowers and plants.
Hager was preceded in death by his former wife, Shirley Hager McMalley. Survivors include son John Hager II of La Center, and granddaughter Kira Nicole Hager of Vancouver.
Burial was at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, with the Woodland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

DONNA HAGSTROM
Donna Lee (Wooldridge) Hagstrom, 62, died Feb. 21, 2007, in Burien.
Hagstrom was born Dec. 9, 1944, in Vancouver, and graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1964.
Hagstrom married James Andersen in 1963 and moved to Seattle. In 1973, she married Carl Hagstrom and lived in Burien for 32 years. She worked as a bookkeeper at various businesses, retiring from Abrasives NW in 2003.
Hagstrom enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, baking, and entertaining friends and loved ones. She sang with the Sweet Adelines in the early 1970s. She will be remembered for her love of life and great sense of humor.
Hagstrom was preceded in death by her first husband, James Andersen. Survivors include widower Carl Hagstrom, daughters Kathleen Price of Auburn, Kellie Bassen of Burien, Laurie Richey of Seattle and Elizabeth Corgatelli of Seattle, son Mark Hagstrom of Kent, sisters Carol Cowan of Kent, Linda Kimball of Port Orchard and Sue Mobley of Vancouver, brothers Bob Wooldridge of Battle Ground and Tom Wooldridge of La Center, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

MARIAN HALBERG
Marian Elaine (Niska) Halberg, 55, died in an automobile accident Dec. 21, 2006, in rural Clark County.
Halberg was born July 14, 1951, in Buffalo, MN, and lived in Clark County for 35 years, the last 30 years in Battle Ground.
Survivors include husband Art Halberg, at home in Battle Ground, sons Art Halberg of Amboy, Jared Halberg of Yacolt, Thor Halberg of Alaska and Joshua Halberg, at home in Battle Ground, daughters Tamara O’Brien and Evangaline Muonio, both of Yacolt, Minda Tapani, Maria Stewart, Bethany Jolma and Beulah Halberg, all of Battle Ground, Gabrielle Halberg, Karla Halberg and Pamela Halberg, all at home in Battle Ground, Linnea Williamson of South Dakota, and Annalee Spencer of Kennewick, mother Linda Niska of Minnesota, brothers Melvin Niska, Victor Niska and Lenny Niska, all of Minnesota, and Charles Niska of Idaho, sisters Evelyn Wilen of Oregon, Annette Carlson and Edie Maki, both of Michigan, Elsie Muonio, JC Johnson and Eunice Burns, all of Minnesota, Lila Schmidt of South Dakota, and Lois Niska of Idaho, and 34 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wed., Dec. 27, 1 p.m., at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church, 32320 NE Lewisville Highway, Battle Ground. CHARLOTTE HALEY
Charlotte Geneve (Haynes) Haley, 86, died Nov. 5, 2006, in Vancouver.
Haley was born July 24, 1920, in Pittsburg, Kansas, lived in California for about 40 years, and moved to Clark County 23 years ago.
Haley had worked as a waitress in California. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, and John Wayne movies. She had been a member of the Eagles.
Haley was preceded in death by brothers George Haynes and Gene Finley, and daughters Becky Bultena in 2005 and Patsy Norris in 1999. Survivors include son Emil Hazelwood of Arlington, daughter Iris Seaback of Battle Ground, 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Elim Cemetery, Brush Prairie, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

PAUL HALEY
Paul Haley, 83, died March 16, 2007, in Vancouver.
Haley was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Orleans, IN, and lived in Illinois, Virginia, Connecticut, Florida, California, Hawaii, Idaho and Arizona before moving to Hazel Dell.
Haley served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years as an electrician mate. He earned a Bronze Star and seven merits of honor for military service. He served aboard the USS Sargo and USS Pippin.
Haley enjoyed traveling. He was a member of Fleet Reserve Association.
Haley was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Haley, in 2002. Survivors include sons Matt Haley of Battle Ground and Steve Haley of Louisiana, daughter Terri Haley of Vancouver, sister Mildred Mobley of Indiana, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Tues., March 27, noon, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 14203 NE 249th St., Battle Ground, with interment at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland. Evergreen Staples Funeral Home, Vancouver is in charge of arrangements.

FRANKLIN HAMILTON
Franklin Arthur Hamilton, 78, died Dec. 1, 2007, in Amboy.
Hamilton was born June 9, 1929, in Vader, and lived in Clark County for 35 years, the last three years in Amboy.
Hamilton was a member of the Amboy Baptist Church for 35 years. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, going to the beach, boating and gardening.
Hamilton had worked as a truck driver.
Hamilton was preceded in death by daughters Vicki Davis and Sheryl Dingman. Survivors include widow Florence Hamilton, at home, daughters Patti Jauron of Oregon, Rhonda Walters of Amboy and Aprile Cresap of Battle Ground, sons Kenneth Hamilton of Portland and Glenn Hamilton of Battle Ground, sisters Pauline Curtis of Longview, Frances Weber and Alice Higgins, both of Kelso, and Rosie Craig of Castle Rock, 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Fri., Dec. 7, 1:30 p.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home Chapel, Battle Ground, with viewing set for Thurs., Dec. 6, 6-8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Wilson Bridge Cemetery, Vancouver, with Layne’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

GLENN HAMILTON

Glenn “Dean” Hamilton, 48, died Aug. 20, 2008, in a one-car accident near Amboy.

Hamilton was born Sept. 25, 1959, in Longview and lived most of his life in Amboy. He attended Amboy and Battle Ground schools. He loved the outdoors and hot rods. His greatest love was his family and The Lord. He attended Amboy Baptist Church. He was employed by Green Willow Trucking in Battle Ground.

Hamilton was preceded in death by his father, Frank Hamilton, in 2007, and sisters Sheryl Dingman and Vicki Dunn, both in 2004. Survivors include mother Florence Hamilton of Amboy, daughter Melissa Hartwig of Nevada, sons Jeff Hamilton of Nevada and Brent Hamilton of Oregon, fiance Tina Trimmer of Kelso, sisters Aprile Cresap of Vancouver, Rhonda Walters of Amboy and Patti Juron of Oregon, brother Ken Hamilton of Oregon, three grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

IRENE HANISCH
Irene J. (Duval) Hanisch, 93, died Sept. 3, 2007, in Vancouver.
Hanisch was born April 3, 1914, in Wild Rice, ND. She lived in Vancouver for four years.
Hanisch was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portland where she was a part of the Altar Society. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and playing bingo.
Hanisch had worked as a store manager.
Hanisch was preceded in death by her husband, William Hanisch, in 1983, and grandson William Menser. Survivors include sons Charles Hanisch of Vancouver and Dennis Hanisch of Battle Ground, daughter Laura Menser of Arizona, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Interment was at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Portland, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT HANSEN
Robert Hansen, 80, died Oct. 16, 2007, in La Center.
Hansen was born Oct. 5, 1927, in Hayes, to August and Esther (Johnson) Hansen. He grew up in the Woodland area and graduated from Green Mountain School in 1942 and Woodland high School in 1946.
He married Phyliss Hanley in 1951 and had three daughters. He married Eva on November 19, 1961, and had two sons and a daughter. He last lived in Vancouver.
Hansen worked as an agent with Bankers Life and Casualty insurance for 49 years. He also worked on his Woodland farm that his father had once farmed, which was near and dear to him. He loved vacationing in Hawaii with his wife Eva.
Hansen was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Hansen was preceded in death by daughter Kerry and sister Donna Hansen in 1997. Survivors include daughters Cheryl Ajami, Debbie Kent and Elizabeth Hansen, all of Vancouver, sons Robert Hansen of Vancouver and John Hansen of Woodland, brothers Walter Hansen and Frank Hansen, both of Woodland, sisters Marie Haynes of Camas and Hilda Wiggins of Oregon, 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Mon., Oct. 22, 11 a.m., at Cedar Creek Seventh-day Adventist Church, followed by graveside services at the Hayes Cemetery. The Woodland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CAROL HANSON
Carol Elizabeth (Lindberg) Hanson, 64, died of pancreatic cancer Oct. 23, 2006, in Battle Ground.
Hanson was born Oct. 20, 1942, in Vancouver, and lived in Clark County all her life, including 34 years in Battle Ground.
Hanson was a lifelong member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. She devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren.
Survivors include widower Frans J. Hanson, at home, sons Jeffrey Hanson of Yacolt and Brian Hanson of Battle Ground, daughters Jacqueline McClellan and Heidi Hanson, both of Battle Ground, and Melanie Sanborn, Holly Brown and Lisa Levanen, all of Yacolt, brother Everett Lindberg of Brush Prairie, sister Doris Guthrie of Battle Ground, and nine grandchildren.
Interment was at Elim Cemetery, Brush Prairie, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

MINNIE HARKLEROAD
Minnie (Derline) Harkleroad, 93, died Oct. 18, 2007, in Woodland.
Harkleroad was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Tuttle, ND. She quit school after the eighth grade and helped raise her younger siblings. She married and had two children. After her divorce, she moved to Washington.
Harkleroad worked in the shipyards in Tacoma in 1943. She moved back to North Dakota and opened a cafe. After the war, she moved back to Washington.
Over the years, she helped raise two families and several step-children. She married Lloyd Harkleroad in 1953 who preceded her in death in 1980.
Harkleroad loved her yard, flowers and garden at her Woodland home, giving away more flowers than she kept.
Survivors include sons Elroy Papke of Elma and Jerry Papke of Woodland, step-sons Bob Harkleroad of Kalama and Jerry Harkleroad of La Center, step-daughter Doris Dunn of Vancouver, 22 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is set for Wed., Oct. 24, 10 a.m., at the Hayes Cemetery, followed by a memorial services at noon at the Clover Valley Community Church, 3212 Lewis River Road, Woodland.

CAROL HARMON
Carol (Holmes) Harmon, 87, died July 24, 2007, in Vancouver.
Harmon was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Portland and grew up in Portland and Clatskanie. She enjoyed the Rose Festival activities. She married Jim Harmon in 1939 and moved to Woodland in 1954. She loved to take her children to Jantzen Beach Amusement Park.
Harmon enjoyed traveling to her second home in southern California. She helped her husband with his business and took care of her family. She never complained.
Harmon was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Harmon, in 2000. Survivors include sons Rick Harmon of Oregon, Jim Harmon Jr. of Woodland, and Jerry Harmon of Kelso, seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Interment was at Hayes Cemetery, with the Woodland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY HARRIS
Dorothy Janet (Amoruso) Harris, 91, died Aug. 28, 2007, in Woodland.
Harris was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Crawford, WA. She married Ralph Harris and lived in Battle Ground before moving to George, WA in the 1950s. She moved to Woodland in 2004.
Harris worked for the Turf Cafe in Quincy for 20 years. She was active in the Mormon Church. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She was a creative person.
Harris was preceded in death by an infant son, Phillip, in 1936, husband Ralph Harris in 1980, daughter Barbara in 1983, brothers John Amoruso and sisters Marie Maple and Evelyn Snow. Survivors include daughters Mary Sinclair of Endicott, Evelyn Dobbins of Amboy, Joan Fulleton of Woodland and Kate Schooler of George, sisters Rose Perrotta of Massachusetts and Betty Brown of Ridgefield, brother Phil Amoruso of Soap Lake, 22 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Harris’ ashes were buried near her husband in Quincy, with Davies Cremation & Burial Services in charge of arrangements.

EDYTHE HARRIS
Edythe Marie (Fordyce) Harris, 72, died Jan. 26, 2008, at home in Battle Ground.
Harris was born April 19, 1935, in Mabton, and lived in Battle Ground for 41 years. She enjoyed reading, spending time with her family, and traveling to Arizona. She and her husband, Dick Harris, own Dick’s Tire Factory in Battle Ground where she worked until she retired in 2000.
Harris was preceded in death by brother Ted Williams in 2005, and sister Phillis Peterson in 2007. Survivors include husband of 54 years Dick Harris, at home in Battle Ground, sons Rick Harris and Scott Harris, both of Battle Ground, daughter Dana Gumringer of Vancouver, brothers Jim Williams and Glenn Fordyce, both of Battle Ground, and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD HARRIS
Richard L. “Dick” Harris, 67, died Aug. 26, 2007, at home in Vancouver.
Harris was born May 29, 1940, in St. Helens, OR, and moved to Ridgefield in 1956. He graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1958 where he lettered in football. He married Grace Barhitte in 1959.
Harris formed Dick Harris Gutter Co. in 1964. He enjoyed motorcycle racing, drag racing, sand drag racing and breeding and racing horses. He was especially proud of his 2-year-old filly Plesant Valy Saly.
Harris was an avid hunter and fisherman. He made numerous pack horse trips to Montana, Idaho, Canada and Alaska. He was a long-standing member of the Slo Pokes Car Club in Vancouver, the Clark County Saddle Club, the Home Builders Association, and the Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
Harris sponsored Little League teams in the 1970s.
Survivors include widow Grace, at home in Vancouver, son Richard “Dale” Harris, daughter Renee Mowry, brother Kenneth Harris, sister Leanne Lasiter, four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

SUE HARRIS
Sue (Wallace) Harris, 76, died Sept. 18, 2007, in Vancouver.
Harris was born July 22, 1931, in Bath Springs, TN, and lived in Clark County for 26 years, first in La Center and the last 17 years in Salmon Creek.
Harris enjoyed cooking, playing cards and slot machines, and watching television, especially soap operas and Price is Right. She also enjoyed helping other people and traveling in her car to visit family members.
Harris was an Avon Lady and a member of Big Piney Wyoming Order of Eastern Star.
Harris was preceded in death by her husband, Benny Harris, in 1990. Survivors include sons Michael Harris of Pennsylvania and Samuel Harris of La Center, daughters Patricia Bozner and Teresa Lake, both of Wyoming, Victoria Harris of Wisconsin and Linda Crabtree of New Mexico, brother Don Wallace, sister Laverne Kline of Oklahoma, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

JANET HARRISON
Janet (Ritchie) Harrison, 88, died March 4, 2008, in Vancouver.
Harrison was born Sept. 15, 1919, in New Haven, CT, and lived in the New Haven and Hartford, CT area for 71 years. She lived in Ridgefield for 17 years.
Harrison worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft during World War II, then co-owned Harrison’s Auto Driving School in Connecticut for 22 years. She enjoyed traveling, reading, bowling and Emblem Club.
Harrison was preceded in death by brothers Thomas Ritchie, Ronald Ritchie and Glen Ritchie. Survivors include husband of 65 years Thomas Harrison, at home in Ridgefield, son Wayne Harrison of Vancouver, daughters Phyllis Bazinet of Georgia and Denise Harrison of Vancouver, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, with Cascadia Cremation and Burial Services in charge of arrangements.

MATHILDE HARRISON
Mathilde Marguerite (Delaval) Harrison, 79, died Sept. 29, 2007, in Ridgefield.
Harrison was born March 22, 1928, in Lille, France, and lived in Clark County since 1959. She lived in Ridgefield for 48 years.
Harrison enjoyed caring for her pets. She worked for a public utility district in Pasco before moving to Clark County.
Harrison was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Harrison Jr., in 1996. Survivors include several cousins in France, three sisters-in-law, brother-in-law and nieces and nephews.
Burial was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Ridgefield, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

BETTY HART
Betty Lou (Mackmer) Hart, 73, died Aug. 4, 2007, in Vancouver.
Hart was born Oct. 8, 1933, in Vancouver. She lived in Vancouver for 27 years, Battle Ground for 14 years, and Felida for 32 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, TOPS, Ft. Vancouver Antique Equipment group and the Genealogical Society. She was known for her cakes. She loved to take pictures. She loved people.
Hart was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald Mackmer, in 1967. Survivors include widower Brian Hart of Vancouver, daughters Connie Brown and Patricia Mings, both of Vancouver, Julia Brodahl-Kelley of Battle Ground, and Katherine Brodahl-Davis of Oregon, sons Robert Brodahl and William Hart, both of Vancouver, Charles Brodahl of Battle Ground and Brian Hart of Seattle, mother Ivora Weems of Battle Ground, 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

PATRICIA HARTMAN
Patricia Ruth (Blommer) Hartman, 78, died March 18, 2008, in Vancouver.
Hartman was born April 21, 1929, in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, and lived in Clark County for 6 1/2 years.
Hartman was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Woodland. She enjoyed crocheting, dancing and gardening.
Hartman was preceded in death by her brother, William Blommer. Survivors include widower Curtis Hartman, at home, sons Michael Whiteside, Curtis Hartman and Gary Whiteside, all of California, daughters Therese Duffy of California and Cecelia Copland of Vancouver, sister Joyce Richardson of California, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held Wed., March 26, 10 a.m., at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Woodland, with burial following at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Woodland. Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, is in charge of arrangements.

JESS HATFIELD

Jess B. Hatfield, 81, died July 28, 2008, in Clackamas, OR.

Hatfield was born Oct. 24, 1926, in LaMoore, ND, and moved to La Center in 1936. He graduated from La Center High School in 1945 and was drafted into the Army. He served two years in Okinawa.

Hatfield moved to Woodland in 1947.

Hatfield was a member of the American Legion for 68 years and was a real patriot. He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking and traveling. He loved his family and the beach. He retired from Weyerhaeuser in 1978.

Hatfield was preceded in death by brother Harland Hatfield and sister Audry Moe. Survivors include widow Maxine Hatfield of Woodland, son Max Hatfield of Kennewick, daughter Eunice Hickerson of Prosser, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his beloved dog, Dickens.

DORIS HAUMESER
Doris Marie Haumeser, 88, died Oct. 24, 2006, in Vancouver.
Haumeser was born Sept. 5, 1918, in White Swan, WA, and lived 33 years in Clark County, the last six in Vancouver.
Haumeser was a member of the Ladies of the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed dancing, playing solitaire and cleaning house.
Haumeser was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Haumeser, in 1992. Survivors include daughters Barbara Hatanaka of California and Kathy Stamp of Vancouver, son Gary Moses of Wenatchee, sisters Kathryn Wyatt of Ellensburg and Hazel Rogers of Vancouver, 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services were held at Lewisville Cemetery, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

MERLIN HAWKINS
Merlin Orville Hawkins, 85, died Feb. 7, 2008, in Ridgefield. Hawkins was born in Ridgefield in June 2, 1922, attended Ridgefield High School where he played football, and was a
lifetime supporter of Ridgefield High School sports. He had volunteered
as a football lineman and attended many Ridgefield High School sporting events.
Hawkins operated a Shell Service Station in Ridgefield, and a Ford dealership in Woodland.
He was a founding member of the Ridgefield Lion’s Club. Hawkins was a founder of Fire District 12 and served as a volunteer fireman. He was a fire commissioner for 32 years. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 for his service
to the Ridgefield community. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Hawkins is survived by his wife Delores Hawkins of Ridgefield,
sons David Hawkins of Ridgefield and Ralph Hawkins of Portland, daughters Kay Melroy of Ridgefield and Peggy Patton of Vancouver, eight grandchildren and 14 great
grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for Sat., Feb. 16, 10 a.m., at the Ridgefield Community United Methodist Church, 1410 S. Hillhurst Rd., Ridgefield, with Layne’s Funeral
Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements. Donations are invited to Ridgefield Spudders sports programs.

GEORGE HAYES
George Leslie Hayes, 49, died Sept. 26, 2007, in Vancouver.
Hayes was born Nov. 17, 1957, in Vancouver. He enjoyed going for car rides, watching Bonanza, playing cards and cooking.
Survivors include parents Joyce and Walt Thayer of Battle Ground, sisters Debbie VanKamp of California and Susan Holliday of Vancouver, brothers James Thayer and Walter Thayer II, both of Oregon, and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Martha Jane (Roberts) Hayes, 94, died May 15, 2008, in Battle Ground.


Hayes was born July 20, 1913, in Astoria, OR, and lived in Clark County for 61 years, the last one year in Battle Ground.


Hayes enjoyed knitting, crocheting and gardening. Family loyalty was very important to her.


Hayes had worked as a secretary for the Bonneville Power Administration.


Hayes was preceded in death by her husband, Richard G. Hayes, in 1972, and granddaughter Judy Eccleston in 1987. Survivors include daughter Jacqueline Eccleston of Battle Ground, sons Richard Hayes of Spokane and David Hayes of Oregon, eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.


Graveside services will be held Tues., May 20, 3:30 p.m., at Venersborg Cemetery, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.


WAYNE HAZEN
Wayne Lee Hazen, 81, died Feb. 2, 2007, in Vancouver.
Hazen was born Feb. 15, 1923, in La Center, served in the Navy during World War II, and retired as a senior master sergeant in 1976.
Hazen made friends everywhere he went. His family remembers the lessons he taught in perseverance, strength and love.
Survivors include daughters Kerri Robberson and Melinda Redfield, son-in-law Mike Robberson, three grandchildren, and one nephew.
Memorial services will be held Sat., Feb. 10, 11 a.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home, 16 NE Clark Ave., Battle Ground, followed by services at Mt. View Cemetery, Amboy. A potluck will take place at Fargher Lake Grange, Amboy, immediately following the graveside services.

LEONARD HEINZ
Leonard Charles Heinz, 82, died March 5, 2007, at home in Mossyrock.
Heinz was born May 20, 1924, in Silverton, OR. He graduated from Scotts Mills High School, Oregon, in 1942, and worked at Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver as a welder on Liberty Ships. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries in the Asiatic-Pacific.
Heinz worked in California oil fields. He moved back to Vancouver in the 1950s and purchased a 20-acre farm in the Barberton area. He worked at Columbia Machine and later owned and operated the Country Cousins Restaurant at Cliff’s Tavern.
Heinz purchased the Hockinson Co-op in the 1960s and operated a grocery and custom meat cutting business. He was a volunteer for the Hockinson Fire Department and drove bus for the Hockinson School District.
Heinz developed his farm into Hillcrest Manor Mobile Home Park which he owned and managed through the 1980s. In the early 1990s, he moved to Mossyrock. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking, caring for his animals, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include widow Lois, at home in Mossyrock, son Steven Heinz of Mississippi, daughters Cathy Kuter of Battle Ground, Janet Neufeld of Vancouver and Donna Ewbank of California, step-son Walt Goll of Vancouver, step-daughter Patsy Thompson of Longview, 10 grandchildren and several other step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place Sat., March 24, 12:30 p.m., at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Vancouver, with Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

MARY HEISLER
Mary Martha (Cox) Heisler, 81, died of natural causes on Nov. 6, 2006 in Battle Ground.
Heisler was born Oct. 8, 1925 in Fruitland, ID. She was raised in Amboy and while a young girl during World War II, worked at the Vancouver Shipyards. She and her family moved to Vancouver in 1950. She moved with her family and lived in the Spokane area for several years. Heisler and her husband returned to Amboy about 20 years ago.
Survivors include husband Clarence P. Heisler of Amboy, daughters Dolores Pritchett of Vancouver, Marcie Heisler of Tacoma, three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Northwood Park Cemetery in Ridgefield handled arrangements. No services were held. Family members encourage memorial contributions to area non-profit organizations.

PAMELA HEREFORD
Pamela Ann (Mazzoncini) Hereford, 57, died Feb. 18, 2007, in Vancouver.
Hereford was born Oct. 1, 1949, in Tacoma, and lived in Clark County for 30 years, the past 26 years in Battle Ground.
Hereford earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Washington University and a masters in education from the University of Portland. She taught in the Battle Ground School District. She also taught at Clover Park School District, Lakewood, and the Hood Canal School District in Potlatch. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She served on the Battle Ground city council 1997-2002. She was deputy city mayor 1999-2001. She was a member of the Battle Ground Education Association. She enjoyed scrapbooking, traveling, and being with her granddaughter, friends and family.
Survivors include widower Jeff Hereford, at home, parents William and Leona Mazzoncini of Tacoma, daughter Katie Hereford of Battle Ground, brothers Gary Mazzoncini of Lilliwaup, Steve Mazzoncini of Port Angeles and Scott Mazzoncini of Kent, and granddaughter Kylie Shefchek of Battle Ground.
Interment was at Lewisville Cemetery, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

MONIKA HENNINGS
Monika Linda (Matthiesen) Hennings, 36, died Dec. 21, 2007, from inflammatory breast cancer.
Hennings was born Feb. 6, 1971, in St. Charles, IL, and moved with her family to San Jose, CA in 1979. She graduated from Prospect High School in 1990. She received a degree in accounting in 1995, a certificate in land use and environmental planning in 2002, and a bachelor of science degree in public administration in 2007 just three weeks before her death.
Hennings worked for the city of Longview as an assistant planner. She previously worked for Clark County, city of Lake Ellsinore, CA, and the city of Lyons, OR.
Hennings was a Girl Scout leader for six years and a children’s ministry leader in her church.
Hennings was preceded in death by her step-father, Art Jester, in 1990. Survivors include husband of 16 years Randall Hennings, at home in Woodland, daughters Rebecca and Taylor, at home, mother Heidi Jester of Woodland, father Peter Matthiesen of Woodland, brothers Ronald Matthiesen and Richard Matthiesen, both of Woodland, Robert Matthiesen of California, and step-brother Glenn Jester of Virginia.
Viewing will be held at Northwood Park Cemetery in Ridgefield on Fri., Jan. 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. A memorial service will be held Sat., Jan. 19, noon, at Ridgefield Nazarene Church in Ridgefield.

BETTY HERREN
Betty Herren, 78, died May 5, 2007, in Clackamas, OR.
Herren was born May 13, 1928, in Longview, and lived in Woodland since 1961. She worked for GLoomis fishing poles and for Fleetwood Homes in Woodland. She was a Hospice volunteer in Longview. She was an avid gardener and member of the Master Gardener program. She attended Clover Valley Community Church.
Herren was preceded in death by son Tom Herren in 1982. Survivors include husband Ben Herren of Woodland, daughters Sandy Leathers of Toutle and Lynn Studer of Vancouver, and granddaughter Marci Taylor of Longview.
A celebration of life will be held Sat., May 12, 11 a.m., at Clover Valley Community Church, 3312 Lewis River Road, Woodland, with the Vancouver Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

VIOLET HERVI
Violet Jenny (Holmstrom) Hervi, 91, died Jan. 26, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Hervi was born Oct. 24, 1915, in Gackle, ND, and lived in Battle Ground for 44 years.
Hervi was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. She enjoyed working on the family farm, raising chickens, animals, a garden and flowers. She also enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
Hervi worked at cleaning houses for 30 years.
Hervi was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Vaino Hervi, in September 2006, daughter-in-law Victoria Hervi in September 2006, four brothers, four sisters, and two great-great-grandchildren. Survivors include son Marvin Hervi of Brush Prairie, daughter Shirley Paso of Battle Ground, 14 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Interment was at Elim Cemetery, Brush Prairie, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

HELLEN HEUVEL


Hellen Louise (Ivie) Heuvel, 89, died April 15, 2008, in Vancouver.


Heuvel was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Junction City, OR, with her twin sister, Ellen. She spent much of her childhood in Junction, City before the family moved to Molalla, OR where they lived the first winter in a tent. During her teen years, she moved with her family to Oregon City, OR. In the mid 1930s she and her twin sister traveled across the United States with their mother, holding town hall meetings. The “Townsend Twins” sang and played their guitars.


During World War II, Heuvel worked as a mechanic and grease monkey at a garage while her husband, John Heuvel, served in the South Pacific with the Merchant Marines. Following the war, the family moved to Vancouver. In 1952, they moved to a Brush Prairie farm and in 1970 to a home in Camas.


Heuvel taught Sunday School and played the guitar in the church orchestra. She was known for her homemade noodles and chicken, and hash browns. She was a “fix it” lady and once took apart an electric range and re-wired it and used it for several more years. She kept her children’s bicycles and neighborhood bicycles in good repair. She made extra money by grooming dogs. 


Heuvel was preceded in death by her husband, John Heuvel, in 1998, her twin sister, Ellen Rindflesch, in 2004, sister Theora Humphries, brother Earl Ivie, and son John Heuvel III in 2006. Survivors include sons Victor Heuvel of Vancouver, Bill Heuvel of Battle Ground and James Heuvel of Green Acres, WA, daughters Helen Schakols of Vancouver, Ruth Maxwell of Alaska and Nancy Fasilis of Vancouver, daughter-in-law Donna Heuvel of Camas, 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.


Visitation will be Wed., April 23, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Chapel, 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver. A funeral is scheduled for Thurs., April 24, 10 a.m., at Peoples Church, 6801 E Mill Plain Blvd., Vancouver, with burial following at Camas Cemetery, 630 NE Oak, Camas.

CHRISTOPHER HILGERS
Christopher David Hilgers, 19, died of a drug overdose Oct. 9, 2007, in Yacolt.
Hilgers was born May 11, 1988, in Vancouver, and lived in Clark County his entire life, the last 6 1/2 years in Battle Ground. He was a past member of FFA. He enjoyed snowboarding, bicycling, skateboarding and video games. He worked as a cabinet laborer.
Survivors include father David Hilgers of Battle Ground, mother Cora Utton of Battle Ground, brother Dallas Hilgers of Battle Ground, sisters Amanda Utton of Battle Ground and Kagnie Hilgers of Amboy, and nephew Tyler Utton of Battle Ground.
Graveside services will be held Tues., Oct. 16, 2 p.m., at Venersborg Cemetery, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

BILLIE HILL
Billie Fay (Robinson) Hill, 50, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease March 7, 2008, in Yacolt.
Hill was born Oct. 31, 1957, in Long Beach, CA, and lived in Clark County for 15 years, the last seven years in Yacolt. She enjoyed fly fishing, making jewelry and going to garage sales. She worked as a parts installer in the electronics industry.
Survivors include daughter Sarah Hill of Vancouver, sons John Hill of Vancouver and Richard Robinson of Yacolt, brothers Jerry Robinson of Montana, Hando Robinson of Arizona and Richard Robinson of Missouri, sisters Frances Bandanm of Iowa, Robin Huffman of Missouri, and Carol Robinson and Honda Lynch, both of Vancouver, and special companion Dean Joy of Yacolt.
Memorial services will be held Thurs., March 20, 2 p.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home Chapel, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

ANNE HIRT
Anne Lisa (Pedersen) Hirt, 53, died at the scene of a motor vehicle accident Jan. 15, 2008 near Fargher Lake.
Hirt was born July 16, 1954, in Patterson, New Jersey, grew up in Billings, MT, and moved to Portland in 1972. She moved to La Center in 1992.
Hirt was a full-time volunteer with the Jehovah’s Witnesses Congregation. She enjoyed her horses. She was dedicated to helping others.
Survivors include widower Ron Hirt, at home in La Center, son Adrian Hirt of La Center, daughter Jennifer Hirt of Arizona, sisters Ruth Erickson and Sovie Pedersen, both of Oregon, and Sonja Kallio of Kalama, father Peter Pedersen and mother Gurine Pedersen, both of Montana, and several nieces and nephews.
The Vancouver Funeral Chapel was in charge of cremation and other arrangements.

LEE HIXON
Lee Homer Hixon, 92, died Nov. 30, 2006, in Vancouver.
Hixon was born Nov. 4, 1914, in Emporia, Kansas, lived in Kansas, Colorado, California, and Oregon, plus Salmon Creek, Kozy Kamp, Ridgefield, Camas, Orchards and Battle Ground in Washington. He lived in Ridgefield for 13 years, and Vancouver for five years.
Hixon enjoyed reading, computers, fixing television sets and radios, home education courses, family get-togethers, doing landscaping, showing daschunds, and horseback riding. He also enjoyed doing artwork, boating, fishing and traveling.
Hixon did farm work. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He worked in coal mining, steel mills, shipyards, Alcoa and computer programming.
Hixon was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Tilley in 2001, and second wife Helen R. Ringo Rieck in 1985. Survivors include sister Irene Brock of Camas, brother Johnney Hixon of New York, daughters Shirley Brant and Dorothy Doll, both of Vancouver, step-son Robert Rieck of Oregon, step-daughter Nancy Lee Dykes of Battle Ground, five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thurs., Dec. 7, 1:30 p.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home Chapel, Battle Ground, with graveside service to follow at Brush Prairie Cemetery, Vancouver. Layne’s Funeral home, Battle Ground, is in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS HLAVAC
Thomas James Hlavac, 64, died Nov. 1, 2006, in Vancouver.
Hlavac was born Dec. 27, 1941, in Cleveland, OH. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed in the telecommunications field, retiring from US West in 1989 and Electric Lightwave in 2006.
Hlavac enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include widow Robyn Hlavac of Vancouver, sons Chris Hlavac of Colorado and Mike Jenkins of Camas, daughters Megan Hlavac of Vancouver and Nicole Russell of Camas, and four grandchildren.

WILFORD HOKANSON
Wilford Edward Hokanson, 98, died Aug. 16, 2007, in Ridgefield.
Hokanson was born June 14, 1909, in Grover, Wyoming. He moved to Idaho where he farmed, and then to Battle Ground in 1956 where he lived for 20 years while working for the state Department of Natural Resources as a fire warden,
Arian’s Logging as a timber faller, and the Battle Ground School District as a custodian.
Hokanson lived in Utah for 25 years and then moved to Ridgefield where he spent the last six years living with a daughter.
Hokanson grew and sold pecans. He enjoyed his family, hunting, mountains, fishing, listening to his family sing, and attending auctions.
Hokanson was preceded in death by his wife, Afton, in 2000, and son Garth. Survivors include sons Darin Hokanson of Woodland, Devon Hokanson of Utah, Clint Hokanson of Ridgefield and Erol Hokanson of Battle Ground, daughters Lenaia Lords and Rhona Legg, both of Idaho, Vione Graham of Ridgefield, and Yohlon Cooper and Kathy Parkin, both of Utah, sister Wilda Swenson of Utah, 54 grandchildren, 127 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sat., Aug. 25, 1 p.m., at the Echersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby, ID.

WILLIAM HOLLING
William Ralph Holling Jr., 64, died of leukemia July 2, 2007, at home in La Center.
Holling was born Feb. 23, 1943, in Portland, grew up in Vancouver and graduated from Fort Vancouver High School. He attended Clark College and earned a degree in business administration from Washington State University.
Holling lived in Portland, Vancouver and Battle Ground, before moving to La Center in the early 1980s.
Holling worked as an accountant for Multnomah County in Oregon. He also worked as a driver for Union Oil and owned a Union 76 service station. He raised cattle and invested in real estate.
Holling enjoyed farming, cattle, nature and fishing. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Holling was preceded in death by his father, William R. Holling. Survivors include widow Pat, at home in La Center, sons Eric Holling of Bothell, William “Scott” Holling of Vancouver, and Andrew Holling and Christopher Holling, both of La Center, brothers Mark Holling of Vancouver and Ronald Holling of Virginia, mother Lauraine Holling of Vancouver, and two grandchildren.
Burial was at Mt. View Cemetery, La Center, with Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Vancouver, in charge of arrangements.

MELVIN HOLM

Melvin Gordon Holm, 82, died June 26, 2008, in Portland.

Holm was born June 10, 1926, in Stanwood, lived in Ethiopia, Africa 1962-1967, Missouri 1967-1972, California 1992-1993, and Battle Ground 1993-2008. He enjoyed woodworking, helping people, singing, and serving his church. He was a missionary in east Africa for 14 years.

Holm was a retired university professor.

Holm was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Louise Holm, in 1964, sisters Evelyn Lacey in 1983, Mildred Stricker in 2004 and Opal in 1920, and brothers Reuben Holm in 1956 and Roy Holm in 1975. Survivors include widow Dorothy Holm of Battle Ground, sons Brent Holm and Bruce Holm, both of Oregon, and Wayne Holm of Vancouver, sisters Olive White of Everett, Twila Lyman of Seattle and Arlene Coordt of California, and five grandchildren.

Services will be held Sun., July 13, 3 p.m., at Meadow Glade Seventh-day Adventist Church, Battle Ground, with interment at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. The Neptune Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

RUSSELL HOLMBERG
Russell Leo Holmberg, 94, died July 28, 2008, in Roseburg, OR.
Holmberg was born Sept. 7, 1913, in Garfield, MN. He spent his early years working on the family farm. In the mid 1920s, he moved with his family to the Vancouver area where he attended Vancouver High School. He played football and track, and was part of a track team that held several local and state records.
Holmberg attended Washington State University for a year, then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attained the rank of sergeant and served as an artillery instructor.
After the war he moved to the Puget Sound area. He operated a Standard Oil bulk plant in Port Orchard for many years with his nephew Gary Holmberg. He was a member of Rotary International. He was a referee of youth athletics in the Puget Sound area.
Holmberg moved to Oregon about 1993.
Holmberg was preceded in death by brothers Walt, Wallace, Gordon and Roy H, and sisters Anne, Aleda, Muriel, Phyllis, Betty and Irene. Survivors include wife of 67 years Pearl, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Taylor’s Mortuary, Roseburg, OR, was in charge of arrangements.

EUGENE HOLT
Eugene Dale Holt, 91, died May 2, 2008, in Vancouver. Holt was born Aug. 6, 1916 in St. Maries, ID, and lived in Clark County for 48 years. He was a lifetime member of Garden Grove Community Christ Church and served as a pastor, then priest and then as an elder. He liked carpentry, the color yellow, watching television and music. He played the guitar. He loved his family and enjoyed the tradition of family dinners. He served in the Canadian military during World War II. He had worked as an appliance repairman. Holt was preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa, second wife Dorothy, and daughters Muriel Holt Atkins in 1987 and Marian “Gail” Holt Bevard Johnson in 2006. Survivors include daughters Dianne Watermeier of Vancouver and Pauline Fjellgaard of Canada, 13 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Interment was at Brush Prairie Cemetery, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

DUNCAN HOWARD
Duncan Brockway Howard, 56, died March 17, 2007, in Longview.
Howard was born March 15, 1951, in Yakima, and lived in Yakima and Seattle before moving to Woodland seven years ago.
Howard was in special education programs, and attended a west coast training college. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in Alaska and in the asbestos and steel industries until becoming disabled 13 years ago.
Howard enjoyed helping his neighbors, and collected salt and pepper shakers and cups. He was a skilled mechanic.
Survivors include foster father Bob Maytash and special friend Lorraine Simoni.
No services are planned, with the Woodland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

B. LLOYDINE HOWELL
B. Lloydine (Carlock) Howell, 64, died Jan. 21, 2007, in Yacolt.
Howell was born April 10, 1942, in Portland, and lived in Clark County for 50 years, the last 3 1/2 years in Yacolt.
Howell enjoyed puzzles, singing and watching John Wayne movies. She was an artist. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and going to the beach.
Howell was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Howell Sr., in 1997, and brother, Bob. Survivors include sons Howard Howell Jr. of Vancouver and John Howell of Amboy, daughters Sheila Ensminger and Brenda Dalke, both of Vancouver, brothers Bill Northrup, Jack Northrup and Frank Northrup, all of Oregon, and 13 grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Memory Memorial Park Cemetery, Vancouver, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

EDWARD HUDDLESTON
Edward Owen Huddleston, 88, died Dec. 29, 2006, in Vancouver.
Huddleston was born Sept. 9, 1918, on Puget Island, and moved to Woodland in 1932 where he spent the rest of his life.
Huddleston was active in sports while attending Woodland High School, and remained a sports fan his entire life. He followed the Seattle Mariners, Seahawks and Trailblazers. Her served in the Merchant Marines in the Pacific Theater during World War II and survived when his ship, the Elmira Victory, was hit by a suicide plane.
Huddleston worked at various jobs and retired from the Cowlitz County Road Department in 1978. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and digging clams.
Survivors include wife of 66 years Loretta, at home in Woodland, son Ron Huddleston of Woodland, sister Doris Wilson of La Center, four grandsons and five great-grandsons.
The Woodland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

ROGER HUNT
Roger Arthur Hunt, 80, died Dec. 17, 2007, in Woodland.
Hunt was born June 18, 1927, in Ilion, NY, where he graduated from high school. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics at State University of New York, and a doctorate in biophysics from Pennsylvania State University.
Hunt taught physics at the State University of New York and Hamilton College. He was director of research at the Interscience Research Institute in Illinois where he worked on visualization of an artificial heart project, the early use of ultrasonics in clinical research, mapping the topography of the brain and cancer research. He was head of physics at United Medical Labs in Portland. He was president of Interscience Inc. in Portland, and worked as a researcher and consultant for Hematronix in California. He held several patents in the hematology field. He enjoyed his work. He lived in Woodland for about 30 years.
Hunt enjoyed singing and was a soloist in his younger years in musicals and churches in New York. He also enjoyed camping and hiking with his family, reading, gardening and his dogs and cats.
Hunt was preceded in death by his brother, Edgar Hunt. Survivors include widow Dolores Hunt, at home in Woodland, sons Daniel Hunt of Tacoma and Galen Hunt of California, sister Ardyth Burch of Arizona, three nieces and four nephews.
Private funeral services are planned, with Riverview Cemetery Funeral Home, Portland, in charge of arrangements.
