U-cut Christmas tree farms are ready for holidays

Posted

Southwest Washington is the place to be for those who enjoy a trip to a tree farm to select and cut their own holiday Christmas tree. Most farms open the day after Thanksgiving and remain open until close to Christmas. Some are only open on weekends or specific days of the week, as noted below.

The Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Association has recommendations for the care of a fresh cut tree. Cut at least a half inch off the bottom of your tree to open the pores which may have become clogged with sap. The tree should be put in water as soon as possible after cutting. Place the tree in a sturdy tree stand that will hold a least a gallon of water. It should be watered daily as it consumes between a quart and a gallon of water each day. If the water level drops below the cut end, a seal will form and no more water will be absorbed by the tree. Miniature lights produce less heat and reduce the drying effect upon a tree. After Christmas, trees can be chipped and composted at recycling centers, or picked up by Boy Scouts for a donation. Trees should not be burned in a wood stove or fireplace.
