Battle Ground hosts city’s first cornhole tournament

Competitors took to the Battle Ground Community Center on Saturday, March 11, as they faced off against one another in a cornhole tournament. To prepare for the madness of March, participants were put in brackets that were updated on the wall after each round.

The cornhole tournament, dubbed the “Cornament,” was put on by the city’s parks and recreation department. Twenty five teams of two competed against one another, while eight singles competed in a separate bracket.

The turnout of the tournament was deemed a success as community members also came together to enjoy food and drinks at the event, said Kim Cederholm, the city’s recreation and facilities manager.

“It means that we are going to run it next year, so we will have our second annual Cornament here in Battle Ground,” Cederholm said.

The tournament was open to players 18 and over. Players were guaranteed two games in their registered category.

The tournament started at 4 p.m. and went on for hours. At the end of the event, trophies were presented to Chris Hansen, who won the single competitor bracket, while the father and son duo of Rick Adams and Jordan Adams won the doubles bracket.

Community members of a wide age range competed against each other.

Of the more notable competitors, Battle Ground Mayor Philip Johnson competed in the tournament, while Battle Ground Deputy Mayor Cherish DesRochers also took part.

“I’m very excited that the crowd came. I think we ended up with just shy of a hundred folks,” Johnson said. “I’m a two time loser (at this event.) At least I gave it my best shot.”

Johnson added that in the words of Jon Bon Jovi, they went out with a “blaze of glory.”

With the subtle announcement of the second annual cornhole tournament, Johnson noted people should plan to sign up for the event next year.

“Overall, I’m very pleased and I think the parks department has done a really good job on this,” Johnson said.

Heathen Brewing, from Vancouver, was onsite with food and beverages. Food options included nachos, and four varieties of tacos as well as chips and queso. Beverage options included various 16 ounce cans of Heathen Brewing’s lager, India pale ale and cider. Heathen estate red or white wine was also available along with non-alcoholic beverages.

“Big shoutout to Heathen Brewing for coming out and bringing food and everything. It’s awesome,” DesRochers said.

There were five main cornhole courts inside the community center for the tournament and a few more courts were set up outside for practice and others’ enjoyment.

The date for next year’s Cornament has not been set. To stay up to date on events in Battle Ground, go online to cityofbg.org/874/Sports-Fitness.
