The board of directors for Battle Ground Public Schools have selected a successor to take the seat vacated by resigning board member Rob Henrikson.

During its Feb. 21 meeting, the school board unanimously voted to appoint Andrew Lawhon as the representative of BGPS’ District 2 seat. He will be sworn in at the regular school board meeting on Monday, March 13.

Lawhon was one of four candidates interviewed by the board at the meeting.

“Each of the candidates displayed a high level of professionalism and commitment,” board president Jackie Maddux stated in a release announcing Lawhon’s appointment. “We were fortunate to interview four people who are so dedicated to their community.”

A lawyer by trade, Lawhon has more than 12 years of experience and is currently an attorney at Jeffrey D. Barrar, P.S. and Clark County District Court judge pro tempore. He is involved in judging middle and high school mock trials, leading youth activities at his local church and participating in the Knights of Columbus. He also serves on the board of directors of the nonprofit Aquinas Vancouver.

Lawhon was humbled by his appointment. In the release he mentioned a quote by G.K. Chesterson.

“Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another,” Lawhon recited in the release.

District 2 covers the central and eastern portions of the school district. The appointment only runs through the results of this year’s election for the position. Candidates for that election will file in May.
