After a 40-year hiatus, sports returned to middle schools in Battle Ground last week as the sound of sneakers on the court and coaches shouting instructions could be heard throughout gyms.

The boys basketball season started on Jan. 3, while the girls season is scheduled to begin on Feb. 7, stated a news release. Teams will play in intramural scrimmages for three weeks, followed by two weeks of competition between the district’s six middle schools.

Tukes Valley Middle School coach Blake Bowers said he saw an improvement in the athletes after just three days of practice.

“They’re understanding the language and the drills,” Bowers stated in the release. “They’re getting faster and more efficient, which is really exciting to see.”

In the spring, Battle Ground’s middle schools will introduce cross country for grades sixth through eighth and soccer for seventh and eighth grades.

In future years, the district plans to add track and field events as well as volleyball. The district is also exploring the addition of wrestling, football, golf and Unified Sports, stated the release.

Parents can go online to         battlegroundps.org/middle-school-sports to learn more about middle school sports. A physical is required before students can participate in organized sports, stated the release.
