Breast cancer survivors invited to dragon boating with Catch-22

Vancouver Lake dragon boating team Catch-22 is inviting breast cancer survivors to pick up a paddle and try the sport from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Vancouver Lake Rowing Club, 8612 NW Erwin O Rieger Memorial Highway, Vancouver.

The team, comprising three divisions, includes a group specifically for breast cancer survivors. The breast cancer division participates in special races, has social events and occasionally travels internationally for competitions. Locally, the team partakes in the Paddle For Life cancer benefit dragon boat races held each August, a press release by Catch-22 stated.

“Dragon Boat paddling provides many benefits for survivors, both physical and emotional. You can begin this sport at your own pace, and not worry about being a ‘super’ athlete to start,” the release stated. “One of the best things about paddling is the experience of just being on the water, and enjoying the friendship of your teammates.”

Participants will learn paddle boating from Catch-22 coaches during the event. Participants should dress in layers and bring water, the release stated.
