Clark Public Utilities has received national recognition for efforts in energy efficiency and environmental initiatives, the utility announced this week.

The American Public Power Association (APPA) recognized CPU with a “Smart Energy Provider” designation. The recognition is given for utilities that demonstrate “a commitment to and proficiency in energy efficiency, distributed generation, and environmental initiatives that support the goal of providing safe, reliable, low-cost, and sustainable electric service,” according to a news release from CPU.

The utility previously received the designation, which runs for two years, in 2019, the release stated. The recognition is based on four criteria — smart energy program structure; energy efficiency and distributed energy programs; environmental and sustainability initiatives; and customer experience.

Clark Public Utilities is one of more than 90 public power utilities across the nation who hold the Smart Energy Provider designation, the release stated. The designation runs from Dec. 1 to Nov. 30, 2023.

Public power utilities earn the designation by “going the extra mile beyond providing electricity for their communities,” APPA Energy Innovation Committee Chair Matt Hein said in the release.

“This designation celebrates utilities that are committed to serving their customers with leading smart energy programs and energy services,” Hein said. “These communities should be proud that their utilities are focused on providing excellent service while planning for the future.”

CPU Manager of Energy Services Debbie DePetris said the utility is proud to receive the recognition.

“Earning two consecutive SEP designations reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering reliable, at-cost energy, our support for clean energy initiatives, and our dedication to helping our customers make the most of the energy they use,” DePetris said.
