Delays expected on southbound I-5 near Woodland

Travelers on southbound Interstate 5 in north Clark County can expect delays and lane closures because of paving work from Aug. 15 to Sept. 5.

The Granite Construction Company, a Washington State Department of Transportation contractor, will direct travelers into two lanes between Woodland and La Center on southbound Interstate 5, according to an Aug. 9 news release.

“We realize anytime we close a lane of the highway it has the potential to affect travel times, so having a single lane closed around the clock for up to 21 days may cause substantial delays,” WSDOT Project Engineer Mike Briggs said. “Travelers have done a great job so far to plan ahead during construction on this project. Those continued efforts will help reduce congestion while crews work to finish pavement repairs and reopen the highway.”

Crews will repair a two-mile stretch of highway. Resurfacing work decreases the need for more expansive repairs, the release stated.

Intermittent double-lane closures will occur between 7:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. One lane, with a reduced speed limit of 55 mph, will remain open for use throughout the three-week project, stated the release.

Workers will use a Smart Work Zone System, which is sensor technology that analyzes roadway conditions to report real-time traffic information on reader board signs. The system is designed to alert drivers of delays so they can make “more efficient driving choices,” the release stated.

Lane closures allow for project timelines to be shortened while expanding safety for drivers and work crews.
