Dev’s Coffee Bar opens third location in Battle Ground

Dev’s Coffee Bar opened its new Battle Ground location on Aug. 6, which previously belonged to Hidden River Roasters and Old Town Battle Grounds.

The building was originally used as a church.

Co-owner Austin Slagle reminisced on the successful grand opening during an interview with The Reflector.

“It went amazing,” Slagle said. “Everything went smooth. It was just a busy day.”

Part of the success was because Battle Ground is “extremely welcoming,” he said.

“Having lived here my entire life, I didn’t realize how strong the coffee community out here was. And on top of that, you also have every single person that came in here seemed so excited to have us here. It was so welcoming that it made it a lot easier for my wife and I to go through the day,” Slagle said.

Since he and his wife Devyn drove by the building every day, they chose it due to its history of being used as a coffee shop. Devyn is also co-owner of Dev’s Coffee.

“The building, being the historic landmark that it is, didn’t really need anything for people to recognize it,” he said. “It just needed somebody to bring it to life. The only reason we chose it, to be honest, is because it’s been a coffee shop for so long.”

Slagle added that opening the location was easy to jump into and have people recognize that it is a coffee shop due to its experience with other coffee businesses. He said the pair acquired the building by chance, as the old owner of Hidden River Roasters, Brandon Pasa, approached them personally and eventually sold it to them.

With the numerous other coffee businesses surrounding the area, Slagle feels Dev’s stands out from the others.

“I think that Dev’s in general stands out from other places because of our ability to humanize the culture,” he said. “I feel like a lot of people in the coffee industry expect their interactions and the creativity in coffee to be the same. I think Devyn and I do a really great job, and our team does a really great job at displaying real life situations … what goes into running this coffee shop, and just in general.”

Another thing that sets Dev’s apart is their drinks themselves.

“For instance, (with) the D.B. Cooper or the Charlie Sheen on our menu, if you have a little sense of humor, you would understand the Charlie Sheen and why that drink is named what it is,” he said.

For the D.B. Cooper, Slagle said it’s a mixture of chocolate, Recipe 22 syrup and Dev’s sasquatch blend espresso. The Charlie Sheen, which is Slagle’s personal favorite, contains Dev’s homemade cold brew, white chocolate, two espresso shots and a splash of cream. With the latter, Slagle said the drink not only tastes good, but served a purpose for Devyn as well.

“My wife actually drank (the Charlie Sheen) daily. And working in the coffee industry, you wake up really, really early sometimes and work long hours. It was her idea to mix cold brew, which already has high concentrated caffeine, then to throw shots on top of it, that’s going to add even more,” he said.

Dev’s Coffee is located at 316 E Main St. in Battle Ground. It’s open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
