Hockinson equestrian team secures multiple top 10 finishes at first meet of season

The Hockinson equestrian team secured 35 top 10 finishes across 20 events during its first meet of the season, which was held at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds in Elma in mid-March.

In the barrels competition, Ethan Wilcox took third as Ellie Barrett earned a fifth place finish. Barrett also had a third-place finish in the breakaway event.

In the Canadian flags event, team A for Hockinson, which consisted of Barrett, Allison Domingos, Braden Roth and Wilcox, secured seventh place.

In the daubing event, Roth secured first place, Domingos took seventh and Barrett finished with an eighth place finish.

Brooklyn Slaby took eighth place in the dressage event.

The Hawks’ drill team of Jewel Atchley, Barrett, Liz Connors, Kaliegh Finklein, Slaby and Evi Vossler finished third overall.

Wilcox also earned fifth in the figure eight competition as Domingos came in ninth. In the hunt seat event, Vossler achieved fourth place as Slaby took sixth.

The in hand trail event saw Finklein secure fifth place, while Vossler finished in 10th place. Finklein also earned another fifth place finish in the individual flags event as Barrett added a seventh place finish.

Wilcox took second place in the keyhole event and Domingos came in seventh.

During the pole bending event, the Hawks earned four top 10 finishes as Wilcox took first, Barrett secured fourth, Atchley took sixth and Domingos ended in seventh place.



Slaby earned a third place finish in the reining event, while Braden Roth came in fifth in the saddle seat event. In the sorting event, both Braden and Trent Roth took fourth place, while Clara DeWitt and Domingos earned sixth place. Slaby added another top five finish with a fifth place spot in the stock seat event.

Barrett and Wilcox earned the top prize in the team bi-wrangle event. A second place finish followed in the versatility event for team B, which included Atchley, Braden Roth, Slaby and Vossler. Team A, which is composed of Barrett, Dewitt, Domingos and Finklein, finished in fifth place.

Three of Hockinson’s working pairs placed as team A of Slaby and Vossler earned fourth, team B of Atchley and Domingos earned seventh, and Connors and DeWitt placed in eighth.

During the working rancher event, Braden Roth earned eighth place and DeWitt placed ninth.

“Huge shout out to the whole team,” stated the group on its social media page. “None of these placings would be possible (without) the encouragement and support from all teammates.”

Hockinson recently wrapped up its second meet of the season, which took place from Friday, March 31 through Sunday, April 2.

The team has asked people for donations to support its season. As of Friday, March 31, they have raised $2,100 of their $3,000 goal. People can donate funds to the Hawks online at www.facebook.com/donate/2469262139898311/? fundraiser_source=external_url.

“Your donation will make a huge impact on assisting this talented team on reaching their goals this season,” the team stated in a Feb. 9 post.

The team’s next meet will be in the Tacoma Unit. It will include a senior recognition event before the state meet takes place in Moses Lake from May 18 to May 21.
