In loving memory of Ella Remmick: 1920-2022

Ella Schaffer Remmick was called home to heaven Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, in Brush Prairie at the age of 102.

Ella was born Aug. 16, 1920, in Streeter, North Dakota, to Joseph and Rosina Schaffer. She helped her father work on the farm. She married Alvin Remmick, also from Streeter, on Oct. 26, 1941. While Alvin served in World War II, Ella followed him, working in Edmonton, Alberta, in administration on the building of the Alaskan Highway. After the war, Alvin and Ella moved to Hagerstown, Maryland. They then moved to The Dalles, Oregon, and in 1955 made their last move to Battle Ground, Washington. Ella worked as a mail carrier for Battle Ground until her retirement in 1982.

Ella had so many talents. Alvin and Ella raised cattle on their small farm in Battle Ground. She loved to garden and would create delicious meals from the things they raised on the farm. She had a room dedicated to her canned goods she grew in her garden, including sauerkraut, pickles and pickled beets, corn and beans. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing many wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses for friends. She loved visiting with her friends, traveling and watching the Portland Trailblazers. But mostly, she loved her two grandchildren, Tim and Sarah Miller. She never turned down an opportunity to spend time with them.

Ella is survived by her daughter, Nancy Miller; son-in-law, Marty; grandchildren, Tim Miller and his wife, Missy, and Sarah Miller, her sister Esther Kleven; and numerous nieces and nephews that were very special to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Remmick; son, Steven Remmick; parents, Joseph and Rosina Schaffer; brothers Edward, Herbert and Arthur Schaffer; and sisters Matilda Pritchett, Alida Buck and Edna Joss.

We would like to thank her wonderful caregiver for the past three years, Julia Georgescu at Bright Care in Battle Ground.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 12919 NE 159th St., Brush Prairie, Washington. Internment will follow immediately after the service at the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery. Layne’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
