In loving memory of Elvin ‘LeRoy’ Helyer: 1945-2022

Elvin “LeRoy” Helyer passed away on Sept. 13, 2022. He was 77 years old. LeRoy was born Oct. 30, 1945, to Eudora Van-Matre “Dody” and Durwood Helyer in The Dalles, Oregon. He was one of six children.

In 1963, LeRoy enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a torpedo-man’s mate on the USS Forrest Sherman. He was honorably discharged in 1969 with the National Defense Service Medal.

On Dec. 31, 1977, LeRoy married the love of his life, Sandy L. Jaggers. They lived in Vancouver, Washington; Tacoma, Washington; and Newberg, Oregon, before settling in Battle Ground, Washington then Washougal, Washington. 

His career was that of a truck driver but for a time they drove semi as a team. LeRoy enjoyed many hobbies. They included volunteering for the Battle Ground and Camas Washougal food bank, The Salvation Army, the Battle Ground Rose Float and Lo-Ke-Co camping club, as well as bean-bag baseball, water skiing, Kountry Kousins Square Dance Club, Eagle A’s and Volcano A’s car clubs.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers: Gordon “Butch,” Wilber “Pat,” and Michael “Mike.”

He is survived by his wife Sandy; two sisters Beverly Brinkley and Judy Daltry; daughter Carol Spence; grandchildren Eric, John, Kevin and Justin; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Ave., Vancouver, Washington, 98684.
