La Center adopts tree protection ordinance in pursuit of Tree City USA recognition

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, the La Center City Council approved Ordinance 2024-08, updating the municipal code to strengthen tree protection measures and support the city’s application for Tree City USA recognition.

Tree City USA, a national program by the Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters, honors communities for their commitment to managing and expanding public trees.

Under the ordinance, the city’s Public Works Department will lead efforts to promote urban forestry. Responsibilities include creating a five-year plan for planting and maintaining trees on public property, increasing public awareness of tree care and organizing annual Arbor Day activities such as tree plantings and proclamations. The Public Works director will oversee these initiatives, ensuring an organized approach to tree management.

The updated ordinance clarifies prohibited activities, such as unauthorized tree removal or damage to public trees and establishes penalties for violations. Definitions have also been expanded to include terms like “public trees,” “nuisance” and “planter strip” to provide clear guidance.

La Center will allocate $2 per resident annually — approximately $8,714 — for tree-related activities, including planting, maintenance and removal. Volunteer hours and community involvement will also contribute to meeting these goals. The ordinance takes effect 30 days after adoption.
