Editor,
The Legacy Forest Defense Coalition and Friends of Clark County are challenging the Dabbler timber sale based on a couple of false assumptions. One is that logging this timber damages critical habitat of the Northern spotted owl, but the article also states there are no documented sightings of this owl among or within 20 miles of this forest from 1900 to 2025. The challenge also states, "This timber sale undermines efforts to combat climate change." And "Mature forests like these in the Dabbler area play a critical role in carbon sequestration." Actually the opposite is true. As this timber is logged and processed into lumber, every board foot retains its carbon. These logs have almost stopped pulling carbon from the air as their growth has dramatically slowed after 40 years of age. The logged trees are replaced by young trees who will pull carbon from the air at an increasing rate for the next 40 years helping to achieve our climate goals.
