Letter to the editor: I miss September 12

Posted

I was pondering recently on the tragic events that happened 20 years ago. I thought to myself, I would never want another 9/11, but I do miss the America of 9/12. This is when stores ran out of flags to sell because they were being flown everywhere. After 9/11, people were Americans before they were upper or lower class, Black, white, Jewish or Christian, Republican or Democrat.

On 9/12, what mattered more to us was what united us, not divided us. How sad it is that we have let hate and unforgiveness seep into our souls. Jesus said it best when he said, “love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” When Jesus repeats a phrase three times, I really pay attention to it. In times of crisis, we discover that we cannot do life on our own. We were made for community. Remember, a coal taken out of the fire goes out quickly. I can only imagine what our world would be like if all people would follow these words of Jesus. What was true 2,000 years ago is just as true today. Let’s all consider how we could go back to 9/12. As Americans, what could you do to return to the America of 9/12? God Bless America.
