Letter to the editor: I will be voting for a change

I have received three mailings so far from Jaime Herrera Beutler in the guise of constituent newsletters sent from the House of Representatives, which are paid for with our tax dollars. The postage is paid by the taxpayers also under the franking privilege. She has never sent out such frequent mailings before. Her opponents have to use their own campaign funds to communicate with voters.  I view this as an improper use of taxpayer funds.

Recent articles in The Reflector have praised Herrera Beutler’s accomplishments such as securing funding for a Battle Ground clinic to provide subsidized health care to people earning up to 300% of the federal poverty level.  For a family of four that means an income of up to $83,250. I view this as another poor decision in using taxpayer funds.

She has a long history of seeking out chiefly non-controversial issues such as motherhood, and roadside water settling ponds to point to as achievements. To my mind, she has been mostly invisible and ineffective in representing the citizens of Southwest Washington. After several terms in the House, she has failed to achieve any meaningful level of leadership or respect among her peers.

I think citizens deserve better representation. I will be voting for a change.

Doug Dalton,
