Letter to the editor: It’s time to be the United States of America

Posted

Where are living people’s right to life?

There are those who profess to be the right to life party, yet fight reasonable gun laws at every turn, no matter how many kids or other innocent people get killed or crippled.

Roe v. Wade is one of many dog whistles blown to rally people’s contributions. I believe in Second Amendment rights, but believe that guns, as a tool whose only purpose is to kill, should require responsible ownership.

When cars first came out, it quickly became obvious that licensing people was required to ensure minimal skills were obtained to operate vehicles. Government is required to protect its people. Maybe it’s time to require a simple test to ensure those buying guns have the basic skills needed to operate firearms. No Second Amendment infringement, just due diligence.

As an American, I shudder to think of the taxpayer dollars spent on lawyers to litigate these issues that have been at the forefront of people’s minds for many years. It seems to me politicians are deliberately exploiting these hot button issues to further their careers and fill coffers, with no regard as to how badly we have become divided.

At a time when we need to pull together the most, they tear us apart. From the pandemic to war in Ukraine, to high gas prices and the economy, now is the time we need to unite as a country and be the example for the rest of the world. It’s time to be the United States of America.

Hey Jeff, guns kill...only when dirtbags get their hands on a gun. Gun ownership, aside from being protected by the U.S. Constitution and the U.S. Supreme Court, frequently gives pause to the dirtbag who is thinking about how much he might be able to steal if he breaks into your house carrying a gun if he thinks you might have one too. It's your right to decide on a gun-free house, but don't tell others they have to follow your example. It's not difficult to know how to use and maintain a firearm and everyone has access to classes in the safe use of them, but when you decide to force people to behave according to your values, you approach a viewpoint which is usually defined as tyrannical. Guns don't pull their own triggers and the only thing that has ever stopped a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun!
