Letter to the editor: We believe in individual rights

Posted

The trouble with Democrats, liberals and progressives is we believe in the principles of democracy.  And we do not have an egomaniac spokesperson stirring us to storm the halls of government, intimidate public officials, and lie to keep in his favor, or a cadre of wealthy people in the background stirring the pot to keep this minority worked up, angry and believing the lies.

We foolishly believe in the United State Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  We believe in individual rights to practice the religion of their choice, in the separation of church and state, in a strong economy, even capitalism, as long as workers are treated fairly and paid a living wage.   We believe a person’s actions determine their worth in the community, not their sexual identity, race, creed, the color of their skin, or their economic status, that economy should support the individual’s basic needs.  Many of us even own guns for hunting, killing rats in our barn, or for target practice.

Are we not angry enough or frightened enough to come together as the majority we are as one voice, a voice louder than rioters, the liars and bigots?  It’s a question I ask myself every day.
