Licensing department may issue paper plates due to shortage

Due to statewide supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Clark County Auditor’s Office and nine licensing subagents announced they may need to start issuing temporary paper permits.

The permit is valid for 60 days, according to a news release. The auditor’s office says to display the permits the same as displaying plates when purchasing a car from a dealer.

Once metal plates are available, customers will be informed and they will be able to pick up their plates at the licensing office, the release stated.

The shortage has only impacted passenger-vehicle licensing, although truck, trailer and motorcycle plates could also be impacted.

During the pandemic, the Department of Corrections slowed down production of metal license plates. The DOC then increased staffing and outsourced production to another state on July 31, stated the release.

“While we haven’t heard for certain when metal plates will be in full supply, we hope our customers are patient while we work through this and will work with them to get them their metal plates as soon as they are available,” said Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey.

Licensing subagents are private businesses overseen by the county auditor’s office that provide licensing services around Clark County.
