Kelso High School student Mia Johnson has been named the winner of the 2025 Congressional Art Competition, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Skamania.
Johnson created her piece, “Peachy Keen,” with colored pencil and watercolor. It will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol complex, which connects the House of Representatives to the Capitol.
“Mia’s artwork captures the importance of joy and connection – and celebrates our community’s love for local fresh fruit and agriculture,” Gluesenkamp Perez said in the news release. “Congrats to Mia for her winning piece, as well as to all the other talented young artists across
Southwest Washington who contributed to the competition.”
Nate Anderson of Vancouver School of Arts and Academics earned second place for his oil painting, followed by Skyview High School’s Tori Rehwaldt in third.
The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the Congressional Institute and held annually to recognize the artistic talents of high school students nationwide. Members of Congress, distinguished visitors and thousands of tourists walk through the tunnel each day to view the artwork, according to the Congressional Institute’s website.
