Nearly 1,000 new COVID-19 cases reported last week

The rate of recent COVID-19 cases in Clark County continued its upward trajectory as the latest numbers from the county health department shows a third week of increases.

Clark County Public Health’s weekly COVID-19 update released on Aug. 12 showed 964 additional cases were reported since Aug. 5. That includes 772 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 192 probable cases based on antigen testing. There were 1,070 active cases in the county, which are one still in the isolation period.

In total, the county has had 28,507 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 1,070 suspected ones based on antigen testing since the outbreak began, Clark County Public Health reported.

The health department reported the county’s recent case rate rose to 191.1 cases per 100,000 population in the past 14 days as of Aug. 12, up from 120.8 per 100,000 reported on Aug. 5. The rate has been increasing since hitting a record low of 50.1 cases per 100,000 reported on July 22, and is the highest rate the county has seen since June 8.



COVID-19 hospitalizations also rose, as Clark County Public Health reported a rate of 6.4 COVID-19 admissions per 100,000 population in the past seven days, up from 3.2 per 100,000 the week prior. There were 68 COVID-19 patients hospitalized while awaiting test results as of the Aug. 12 update, occupying 12.1 percent of hospital beds in the county.

Clark County Public Health reported four more confirmed COVID-19 deaths in its weekly update. They included a man and a woman both older than 80, a man in his 70s, and a man in his 30s, all of whom had underlying health conditions. Those deaths bring the county’s total to 300. Of that number, 267 were confirmed to be due to the disease and 33 are suspected COVID-19 deaths.

The county’s share of confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths statewide has remained largely the same. Washington State Department of Health data from Aug. 12 showed the county had roughly 5.8 percent of confirmed cases and about 5 percent of deaths.
