Petition pushing back on COVID-19 mandates is certified by auditor’s office

A “mini initiative” to prohibit what backers call discrimination based on health related to the COVID-19 pandemic response is headed to the Clark County Council after enough signatures were verified by the Clark County Auditor’s Office.

On Dec. 30, the auditor’s office certified the mini initiative and determined 8,316 of the 11,505 signatures gathered for the petition were registered Clark County voters. In order to move onto the Clark County Council, the petition needed 8,311 valid signatures based on past election voter turnout.

A release from petition backers noted it took 57 days to collect all the signatures submitted. The petition calls on the Clark County Council to make an ordinance that prohibits “all mandates within Clark County that discriminate against a person’s health and/or health information privacy.”

The petition calls for an ordinance that specifically prohibits “any and all discriminatory mandates, orders or compulsory requirements within Clark County buildings or land use that discriminates against an individual based on his or her current health status, violates health privacy or that does not honor health, religious or moral objectors in an equitable manner.”

The draft ordinance states violations of the ordinance could lead to fines, permit denials and revocations.

As part of the mini initiative process, the Clark County Council has 60 days from receiving the certification to host a public hearing on the petition. Following the hearing, council may approve, reject or modify the proposed ordinance.
