The Ridgefield Family Resource Center recently received a $10,000 donation following the Ridgefield Public Schools Foundation’s annual Turkey Trot event in November.
The fifth annual Turkey Trot attracted over 700 participants and nearly 20 local businesses and organizations, stated an April 6 news release.
The Turkey Trot raised nearly $20,000 in all.
“Donating to the family resource center is important to the foundation because it provides students and families in our community with resources during times of need, helping to create conditions that allow all students to reach their full potential,” stated foundation President Rachelle Simmons in the release. “Promoting equity and community are foundational aspects of the foundation’s work.”
The resource center is located in downtown Ridgefield. It provides students and families in the city with clothing, food and other basic necessities. The items are available through Care Closets located at the district’s schools.
“We are extremely grateful to have the Ridgefield Public Schools Foundation on our team to support the whole child and help to remove barriers to education,” stated Chris Poppert, who is the coordinator of the family resource center. “The annual contributions from the Turkey Trot have become essential in the yearly operations of the family resource center. We are 100% reliant on donations from our community in order to provide support to our students and their families during challenging times.”
Georgianna Jones, a foundation trustee and the lead event coordinator, said the Turkey Trot allows families in the community to come together and also give back to others.
“It’s a win for everyone,” Jones stated in the release. “Our high school volunteers earn community service hours, our residents get an opportunity for exercise while enjoying the natural scenery of our town, and the Ridgefield Family Resource Center receives much needed funding to help meet the needs of others.”
The Ridgefield Public Schools Foundation is a privately funded nonprofit organization that was established in 2009.
