Strange lights in view across the western sky are Jupiter and Venus

The two planets, located on opposite sides of the earth in our solar system, came within close proximity to each other on March 1 and March 2.

Jupiter and Venus were both in the same telescopic field of view and will remain close together for the coming weeks.

“Eager skywatchers can get started shortly before sunset on Wednesday, as Venus will begin to stand out against the background sky even before the sun has set,” Alison Klesman from Astronomy.com said prior to March 1.

With two planets in such close proximity, people hopped onto social media to report the strange lights. They’re not UFOs, but it’s still a rare sight to see two planets so close together in the vast night sky.
