Street preservation projects underway in Battle Ground

Crews have started work on about $900,000 of improvements for pavement conditions in Battle Ground neighborhoods through this year’s Street Preservation Program.

Projects include completely replacing road surfaces at six locations. Employees will remove the existing surface layer and replace it with a new layer of asphalt, stated a news release.

“We’re planning for today and tomorrow,” Mayor Adrian Cortes said. “Our street projects focus on sustainable improvements and an ongoing commitment to efficient use of public resources.”

Curb ramps at the same six locations will also be upgraded under the current standards for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“Federal requirements mandate that curb ramps be upgraded to current ADA-compliant standards along streets receiving treatments that are considered an alteration,” stated the release.

The locations include a portion of Northwest 29th Avenue, Northwest Second Circle, and Northwest Third Circle; Northwest Third Court; the intersection of Northeast Grace Avenue and Northeast 249th Street; Southeast Eaton Boulevard between South Parkway Avenue and South Grace Avenue; Southeast sixth Street and portions of Southeast Clark Avenue; and Northeast Fourth Court and a portion of Northeast Third Avenue.

Another project will repair sections of four roadways that have developed deep potholes and crumbling asphalt. To accomplish this, crews will dig out damaged sections then fill and seal them with hot asphalt.

Project locations include Southeast Eaton Boulevard at Southeast Commerce Avenue; Southeast Fairgrounds Avenue just south of Main Street; Southeast Second Avenue and Southwest 19th Street; and two locations on Northeast 249th Street on the west and the east side of Northeast Fourth Avenue.

The repair will help preserve the road until a more permanent fix can be funded, stated the release.

Crews are also crack sealing, or applying asphalt rubber into cracks on the road, for about 10 miles of roadway in Battle Ground.

Crack sealing prevents water intrusion and will prepare for the planned construction of a curb-to-curb slurry seal in 2022, stated the release.

The road work will include installing 18 miles of fog and centerline striping on neighborhood roads and arterials.

The Street Preservation Program is Battle Ground’s multi-year project to maximize budget costs.
