Wilson Show Horses in Battle Ground attended an annual horse show in Monroe hosted by the Washington State Paint Horse Club and brought home a plethora of accolades.

A number of riders, which featured kids and adults,  attended the show which ran from July 22 to July 24. They exhibited their riding capability and the skills of their horses in a variety of categories that were judged.

Wilson’s co-owner Anthony Wilson said the show is one of their favorite ones to attend.

At the event, six people judged participants in categories like western pleasure and hunter saddle, horsemanship and equitation, halter, showmanship and trail.

The show featured a number of clubs like the Challenged Horseman and American Paints Program, otherwise known as CHAMPS, which serves riders with various disabilities.

Compared to last year, Wilson said this year’s show in Monroe was significantly larger.

“It’s kind of nice because it’s a local show for us because a lot of what we do tends to be in California or Vegas. But this one was definitely a larger show for this club,” Wilson said. “The novice youth and youth entries were up a lot. The youth has been down for several years, so we’ve been trying to get those numbers up.”

Wilson said the horse show featured “world-level competition.”

At the show, Kaitlyn Ferguson and her cousin Ava Linton, who are both local to Battle Ground, rode at the competition on their horses A Good Made Machine and The Jerry Maguire.

While Linton’s horse is new to her, Wilson’s wife Kylee Miller, said they have had a successful show season so far. Linton won the youth Hunter Under Saddle award at the competition.

Ferguson has been involved in Wilson Show Horses for the past seven years, and won first show reserve in the amateur western pleasure.

“(Ferguson) actually has gone on to ride with the auburn equestrian team, which is the number one equestrian team in the country,” Miller said.

Then there’s Stella Boyer, who rides The Batt Boy. The duo won the reserve highpoint youth walk trot. Miller said Stella lives in Olympia and is new to the team at Wilson Show Horses, but they drive down to practice a couple of times a week.

Kathy Hernandez and her horse, Factor in the Blues, won class champion in both green Hunter Under Saddle shows. Dakota King rode Especially Fancy, and became the class winner in the senior Hunter Under Saddle and novice amateur Hunter Under Saddle.

As for Jessica and Vicky Muller, their horse Kissin The Girls, won the reserve green western pleasure category. Miranda Maldonado and her horse, Brighton My Day, rode in the trail show for their first time. Although they didn’t win in that category, Maldonado was class winner in the novice amateur equestrian.

Layla Perrine and her horse, Hott Rod in the USA, won the reserve novice youth equestrian and novice youth trail, tied for first in novice youth showmanship and also got into the top five overall in the Hunter Under Saddle. Alison Drake finished in the top five in the Hunter Under Saddle.

People from Washington, Oregon, Canada and sometimes Idaho attend the Monroe show.
