Woodland ends season at district tournament

The Woodland softball team had its rallies, but couldn’t manage a win at the 2A District 4 softball tournament in Chehalis on Thursday, May 18, losing 4-3 to Tumwater and 25-14 to W.F. West.

The Beavers fell in a 4-0 hole three innings into their opener against the defending state champion Thunderbirds, managing just one hit over their first time through the order.

From there on, Woodland started to piece some things together, manufacturing a pair of runs in the fifth and cutting the deficit to one run with two outs in the seventh on an RBI single by Gabi Silveria. That knock put the tying run on third base, but the T-Birds escaped before she could come home with a diving snag to end the game.

The loss sent Woodland into loser-out territory and their bats stayed hot against W.F. West. But the Bearcats had bats of their own, and after the Beavers scored seven runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 8-8, the defending district champs dropped 17 in the final two innings to pull away with a run-rule win.

Sophomore Bynn Skelton went 3 for 3 against the Bearcats, coming a triple shy of the cycle, with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Emily Hughes — the lone senior on Woodland’s roster— went 2 for 4 with a walk, two RBIs, and three runs in her final game in green and black. Silveria added three RBIs in a 2-for-4 outing, finishing the day with two hits.

Woodland ends its season with an 11-10 record. The Beavers will lose Hughes to graduation but will return eight starters, six of whom are underclassmen.
