The Washington State Director’s Association (WSSDA) recently recognized the Battle Ground Public Schools and Hockinson School District boards of directors with 2024 Board of Distinction awards.

This year, a record-breaking 37 schools across Washington received the award, a WSSDA news release on Nov. 2 stated.

“This year’s applications were truly inspiring,” WSSDA Director of Leadership Development Dr. Heather Curl said in the news release. “We’re grateful for each school board’s efforts to support students — whether by expanding dual language programs, prioritizing physical and mental health or identifying and addressing opportunity gaps in access to algebra and advanced placement courses.”

The Board of Distinction award, enacted in 2009, highlights each board of directors’ efforts to effectively govern while increasing equity within their school districts. Boards that apply to the WSSDA are assessed based on their management of “opportunity gaps,” where there is an unequal distribution of resources or experiences that impact student academics, health and economic outcomes, the news release stated.

Recipients of the Board of Distinction award are eligible for the Boards of the Year award. The WWSDA will announce the recipients during its annual conference, held Nov. 21-23, the release stated.

The WSSDA, a state agency, is composed of 1,477 elected school board members from across Washington. To learn more about the agency, visit wssda.org.
