Authorities say fire crews rescued a calf on Wednesday night after a heat lamp caused a barn fire in Rose Valley.

Crews responded at about 11 p.m. to the 100 block of Ranch Road, near the butchering location for Matt's Custom Meats on North Maple Hill Road.

Upon arrival, crews reported smoke coming from the attic of a two-story barn, but were able to gain control of the fire in less than 20 minutes, according to a Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue press release.

The fire was extinguished an hour later, also with the help of Cowlitz County Fire District 5 out of Kalama.

While battling the fire, crews rescued a 2-week-old calf from the burning barn. No injuries to the calf were reported, the press release states.

The blaze was contained to the barn's lower floor, with crews removing large amounts of smoldering hay.

An unsecured heat lamp was found to be the cause of the fire, according to the press release.

Cowlitz 2 advises people to keep heat lamps away from flammable materials, like animal bedding, and ensure a working fire extinguisher is on hand for emergencies.
