The Battle Ground girls soccer team focused on ball possession and maintaining a positive attitude, which helped lead them to add two victories on their schedule last week.
The Tigers improved to 3-0-2 on the season last week with a 1-0 win over La Center on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and a 3-0 win on Thursday, Sept. 14 over Seton Catholic.
In the second half of their 1-0 win over La Center, senior Avery Lammers scored the game’s only goal on the night for the Tigers, although Battle Ground had many shots-on-goal throughout the game.
“Let’s give credit to our goal for Lammers,” Battle Ground head coach Cindy Brooks said. “She hasn’t seen a whole lot of varsity playing time, but yet she was there at the end to finish.”
In the first half, La Center forced Tiger senior goalkeeper Clair Moss into two diving saves, which were the Wildcats’ best opportunities to score on the night. In the second half, junior goalkeeper Camille Cresap recorded two more saves to keep the 1-0 shutout for the Tigers.
Ball possession and a positive attitude is what Brooks would like to see all season for her Tigers.
“We wanted to keep possession of the ball and maintain switches and get the ball outside wide, and the girls succeeded in that,” Brooks said. “They kept a positive attitude the whole way. … So going forward, we’re just going to keep the positive attitude and take on one game at a time.”
The Tigers’ roster includes eight seniors this season who have been part of the program since Brooks took over as head coach three years ago.
“... These guys have been rock steady coming up,” Brooks said. “This is the third year I’ve had them, and I’m just so happy and proud to have these guys.”
The Battle Ground girls soccer team played Seton Catholic High School on Thursday, Sept. 14 resulting in a 3-0 win. The Tigers played their rival Prairie Falcons on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 19, but results were not available before press time. The Tigers will play their first 4A Greater St. Helens League game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 in a matchup against Union High School on home turf.
The La Center girls soccer team moved to 3-1 on the fresh season after the loss to the Tigers. They played Stevenson High School on Tuesday, Sept. 19. They next play the Trappers at Fort Vancouver High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.
