Airman recruit Tyler Grossman, a native of Battle Ground, currently serves in the U.S. Navy as part of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 35.

A 2023 River HomeLink High School graduate, Grossman is an aviation maintenance administration man supporting operations on the MH-60R Sea Hawk, the Navy’s most advanced rotary-wing maritime strike helicopter.

Grossman joined the Navy five months ago to build a strong career and make his family proud.

“I joined the Navy mainly for a good career and to make my sister proud,” he said in a news release. “I wanted to see the world, so I chose the Navy. I also wanted to be a pilot.”

HSM 35 plays a critical role in naval aviation, flying and maintaining helicopters designed for a variety of missions, including maritime target strikes, submarine hunting, search and rescue, medical evacuations and supply support.

Grossman credits his hometown upbringing with shaping his values and work ethic.

“Growing up, I learned the importance of discipline, patience and leadership,” he said. “Each of those three things has helped me in my service in the Navy. It takes discipline to wake up, get here, and get through the daily grind. I learned I needed to have patience with other people and with myself as I’m learning my new job and getting the hang of it. Having leadership skills means I’m able to help those around me. I’m also developing problem-solving skills.”

Grossman is already making a strong impression in his squadron.

“I’m proud that I’m able to be here to make a good impression on my mentors with my work ethic,” he said.

Looking ahead, Grossman hopes to advance through the ranks and take advantage of the Navy’s Seaman to Admiral (STA) 21 program, which offers enlisted sailors the chance to attend college and earn a commission as a naval officer.

Reflecting on his journey, Grossman expressed gratitude to his family, particularly his mother, Melissa, for supporting him through boot camp.

“Serving in the Navy means I’m serving my country, but it also means having an honorable job and an honorable career path,” he said.
