Battle Ground Public Schools seeks applicants for advisory, curriculum committees

Battle Ground Public Schools is on the hunt for volunteers who could provide input on student learning and district initiatives.

The volunteers would either serve on the citizens advisory committee or three curriculum adoption committees, stated a news release.

Members of the district’s citizens advisory committee serve an advisory role to the superintendent and school board by weighing in on school programs, policies and other issues.

The committee is composed of 30 to 40 community members within the Battle Ground school district who represent business, municipal, and faith-based leaders, as well as parents and senior citizens, the release stated. Terms on the committee span three years. The group typically meets from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month from October to May, according to the release.

Applications must be submitted by Aug. 25 online at tinyurl.com/3z9svssy. Selected applicants will be notified by early September via email and are invited to attend the first citizens advisory committee meeting of the year at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the media center at Battle Ground High School, 300 W. Main St.

Volunteers on the curriculum adoption committees will cover English language arts curricula and social emotional learning for kindergarten through eighth grades, and social studies for fifth, sixth and eighth grades. Each committee will feature three parents or community members, who will work alongside teachers and administrators.

Each committee will meet eight times with additional “homework” that is expected to be done outside of the meetings. All of the meetings will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays between Sept. 13 and April 18. Committee members are also expected to attend school board meetings for the adoption of the curricula, which the release said will likely be in May and June.

Applications for the curriculum adoption committees must be submitted by Aug. 28 online at tinyurl.com/yc4uj55t. There will then be follow-up interviews for selected applicants.

The release stated the district expects to select members by Sept. 1.
