BGPS to host community discussion on district finances, future levies

Battle Ground Public Schools is inviting community members to participate in a discussion about the district’s financial future, including budget priorities and potential educational programs and operations levies.

The public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, in the media center at Battle Ground High School, located at 300 West Main Street.

According to the district, financial stability is critical to supporting educational programs and preparing students for future success. School board members and district leaders will lead the discussion and gather feedback from attendees about the district’s priorities moving forward.

“Public schools belong to the communities they serve and should reflect the community’s priorities,” Battle Ground Public Schools Superintendent Shelly Whitten said in a statement to The Reflector. “Earlier this year, the community input reflected student safety and well-being, academic instruction, support and activities for students and college and career preparation. However, the state does not provide sufficient funding for programs and staff positions that support those outcomes.”

Whitten said community involvement will be important as the district considers its next steps.

“We must work with community members to shape a path forward that will bring change and empower schools to effectively prepare students for the future,” she said. “I hope that everyone will consider joining us. Your feedback is valuable.”

The event is open to the public and does not require advance registration. Child care will be available for children older than 1 year who are bathroom-trained.

Because of the meeting format, the session will not be recorded. However, district officials said a summary of the discussion will be posted on the district website, battlegroundps.org,
