Clark County residents who purchase a natural Christmas tree this holiday season are encouraged to take advantage of local recycling options, giving used trees a purpose long after the holidays.
“Recycled Christmas trees are chipped into mulch, which is a natural and low-cost product that can help conserve water and beautify garden beds and landscaping. When organic waste like trees rots in landfills, it creates methane, a potent greenhouse gas,” a Clark County news release stated.
All ornaments, lights, tinsel, wire and stands must be removed before recycling. Flocked and artificial trees cannot be recycled and should be placed in the garbage, according to the release.
Curbside tree recycling will be free for Waste Connections customers with yard debris or organics service. Customers may place tree pieces no longer than 5 feet inside or next to their yard debris or organics cart on their regular service day. An additional fee may apply if the tree is set out in addition to a full cart, the release stated.
Waste Connections customers without yard debris or organics service may place trees beside their garbage cart for collection by purchasing an extra 32-gallon bin. Trees collected this way will be disposed of at the landfill.
Christmas trees may also be recycled through Scouting America in select neighborhoods on Saturday, Jan. 4. The service is free, though donations are encouraged. More information is available at scouttreerecycling.com.
Trees of any size may also be recycled for a small fee at the following drop-off locations:
