Clark County Public Health urges drivers to watch for children during summer break

Clark County Public Health is reminding drivers to use extra caution now that students are out of school for the summer.

With classes dismissed, more children are expected to be walking, biking and playing near neighborhood streets throughout the day. Public health officials said drivers should stay alert for children who may be distracted or may step into the road unexpectedly.

The agency urged motorists to slow down, especially in residential areas, and to avoid distractions while driving. Officials recommended placing cellphones and other distractions in the back seat or out of sight before getting behind the wheel.

Drivers are also reminded to give pedestrians the right of way and to carefully check for bicyclists, walkers and runners when turning. Public health officials noted that children and other pedestrians may not always be immediately visible, particularly near intersections, parked vehicles or driveways.
