Clark County surpassed 1,000 deaths related to COVID-19 as the recent case rate of the disease also experienced an increase.
Clark County Public Health’s Jan. 12 report included 51.9 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population over seven days, up from the 42.3 per 100,000 reported on Jan. 5.
The statewide case rate also rose. As of Jan. 12, Washington had 70.6 cases per 100,000 population, up from 58.1 per 100,000 the prior week.
Recent case rates lag behind the most recent counts of cases. The health department’s most recent case rate was based on activity from Dec. 27 to Jan. 2.
The county’s weekly count of COVID-19 cases increased based on the latest data. The health department reported 311 new COVID-19 cases between Jan. 5 and Jan. 12, more than the 225 reported between Dec. 29 and Jan. 5. In total, there have been 110,472 confirmed and probable cases in Clark County since the outbreak began, although that number does not include at-home tests, which often go unreported.
Clark County Public Health’s Jan. 12 report included 10 additional confirmed COVID-19 deaths and two deaths suspected to be due to the disease since its Jan. 5 update. The number is more than the nine confirmed deaths and one suspected death reported the prior week. The deaths bring Clark County’s total to 1,007, which includes 857 confirmed and 150 suspected deaths.
Though disease activity is on the rise, the number of COVID-19 patients occupying hospital beds in Clark County dropped. As of Jan. 12, 11% of beds had either patients with confirmed COVID-19 or patients awaiting test results, down from 14.3% reported on Jan. 5. The number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds occupied by COVID-19 patients and patients awaiting test results landed at 10.2%, less than the 16.1% the prior week.
New COVID-19 hospital admissions rose in the latest data. In its Jan. 12 report, the health department reported 8.2 admissions per 100,000 population in the past seven days, up from 7.2 admissions per 100,000 population reported on Jan. 5.
Clark County’s statewide share of COVID-19 cases and deaths stayed about the same as the prior week. The Washington State Department of Health reported the county had about 5.8% of cases and 6.6% of deaths.
