Dippin’ for smelt in the Cowlitz River

Posted

Eager net-anglers packed the banks of the Cowlitz River on Thursday, Feb. 15, for a one-day smelt-dipping opportunity.

People could catch a daily limit of 10 pounds with a net because it is unlawful to catch smelt from a vessel. The limited opener for smelt-dipping lasted from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Kelso to Castle Rock.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife stated in a press release that fishery managers will monitor the smelt run and catch effort to determine if additional fishing days can be supported. To check for updates and regulations, visit wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/smelt.
