Fall officially began on Sept. 22.
By Thursday, Oct. 1, conditions had remained incredibly dry.
The dry start to fall has impacted the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge as migratory waterfowl lack options to forage for food in ponds and waterways.
The result for birders is a lack of species diversity to start the month of October. In the last 30 days, 119 avian species have been documented on eBird at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge’s River S Unit.
However, for the same last 30 days, 168 species of birds would likely be found at the refuge.
