The Clark County Sheriff’s Office highlighted a father-son duo on Father’s Day as one generation of service prepares to follow another.
Cody Schmidt, who has served for three years as a corrections officer at the Clark County Jail, is set to attend the local academy in July as he begins the next step in his career as a deputy sheriff.
“I wanted to pursue this career because I want to serve my community,” Cody said. “I have lived in Clark County all my life, and this is the way I wanted to give back to the county. I was also highly inspired by my dad to work in this career field.”
His father, Sgt. Kevin Schmidt, has served with the sheriff’s office for 28 years. For him, seeing his son begin a law enforcement career has been especially meaningful.
“I am proud of his choice to enter this noble profession,” Sgt. Schmidt said. “I am not surprised by his choice. He made it on his own. I never pushed him into it, or away from it.”
As Cody prepares to enter the academy, Sgt. Schmidt said the advice he would give his son centers on empathy and patience. He noted that deputies often meet people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives, making compassion an important part of the job.
The sheriff’s office used the Father’s Day post to recognize families who dedicate themselves to public service and to honor the connection between the two Schmidts as Cody begins his career in the same agency where his father has spent nearly three decades.
