Hockinson students earned top honors at the annual Clark Public Utilities Solar Car Challenge, with Hockinson Heights Elementary School teams placing first and second and Hockinson Middle School earning third.
The Solar G.O.A.T.s team, consisting of Jackson Heid, Ian Edwards and Vann Rawdin, took first place for their presentation and interview. The Speed of Light team, with Gabriel Rhew, Dallas Hendrickson, Kit Massie and Sterling Daniels, placed second after winning the race portion of the competition. Hockinson Middle School student Charlie Jackson represented a team that placed third, according to a Hockinson School District news release.
Students prepared for the challenge through weekly study sessions, where they learned about solar energy, torque and gears while building and refining their cars.
Hockinson Heights Elementary coaches Natalia Christofferson, Michelle Perry and Dannielle Ledbetter supported the elementary teams, while science teacher Rachel Kolafa advised the middle school participant, according to the news release.
