‘Hungry’ Woodland bites R.A. Long at Beaver Stadium

The Woodland girls soccer team was able to get ahead early and hang on late for a 2-1 win over R.A. Long, Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Beaver Stadium.

“(Our) defensive four did a great job limiting chances and also getting up into the attack,” Woodland head coach Jeff Flanagan said.

In the attacking third, Carly Coltrin continued her streaking start to the season by scoring both of the Beavers’ goals. And she scored them both in the first half, starting with an early assist by one of the Ingle sisters.

It was most likely Ruby who set up that shot, since she’s a forward and that just makes sense. But Verity Ingle very well could have gotten loose from her defender spot to set up the score in dynamic fashion. Sources were unclear on that point. In either case, the Ingle helper wound up being important down the stretch.

The hosts led 2-0 at halftime, but the Lumberjills were able to get within one score after the intermission. That goal was scored by Sienna Dorland, and added an extra level of intensity to the scramble to the final whistle.

“Credit to Woodland for coming out hungry,” first-year RAL coach Angel Orozco said.

In the junior varsity contest, R.A. Long defeated the Beavers, 2-0. Both programs are under new direction this season, with Flanagan and Orozco taking over their respective lead roles in the offseason. And the similarities don’t end there.

“We were talking about how we are starting fresh with our respective programs and some of the challenges that go with that, and he had some really encouraging words and advice, which I appreciate,” Flanagan said of Orozco.
