If you ever called Keri Tobel, you know how hard it was to hang up. She would slip in one more “bye,” then another, until the goodbye felt more like a hug. On June 25, 2025, after decades of loving fiercely and giving without limits, our Nana Keri finally let go of the phone line and took Heaven’s hand.
Born Dec. 7, 1956, in Portland, Oregon, Keri lived a life marked by deep compassion and generosity. She passed away in Battle Ground, Washington, on June 25, 2025.
Keri survived breast cancer long ago, stunning us all with her grit. When an unexpected illness barged in two years back, she suited up for another round, determined to squeeze out more time with the people she adored. She fought so we could adjust, so we could feel ready. Though, learning to live without her will be the hardest thing we’ve ever done.
Her definition of family had nothing to do with blood. If you crossed her path, you were in. Need a coat? She’d shrug off hers. Need an ear? She’d talk until sunrise. Need love? She had an endless supply.
Left to treasure her stories are her sister: Sue Dier; her sons: Todd and Anthony (Tony) Tobel; her 12 grandkids; and her great-granddaughter — each of whom carries a piece of her generous heart. We’ll recognize her in every playful tease, every lingering goodbye and every act of
kindness.
“Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his
unfailing love.” — Lamentations 3:32
To celebrate Keri’s life, a funeral service will be held on Aug. 8 at 5
p.m. at Lewisville Park, at the Oak Shelter. Wear what you feel
beautiful in and bring a memory to share. Pay her kindness forward: buy
someone a coffee, donate a warm coat or chat a little longer on the
phone. That’s exactly what Nana would want.
