In loving memory of Margarete Lawson: 1940-2026

Margarete Paula Lawson, 86, of Battle Ground, Washington, passed away peacefully Feb. 23, 2026.

Margarete was preceded in death by her husband, Rayburn Lawson, who passed in 2018. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Johnston (Brad); her son, Jeff Lawson (Becky); and her beloved grandchildren, Payton Lawson and Kendall Lawson, who were the center of her world.

Born in Germany during World War II, one of 12 children, Margarete grew up in poverty and learned early the value of hard work and resilience. As a young immigrant to the United States, she built her life through determination, helping bring over her mother and a few of her brothers and sisters to join her, while others remained in Germany. She later owned and operated a local restaurant, where she became known for her strong work ethic and sharp personality. In the restaurant, she didn’t just serve wonderful meals — she served attitude and insults that everyone kept coming back for.

She was tough, resilient, and never one to sugarcoat anything. Margarete would tell you exactly what she thought, no matter the consequences. She was the rock for her family and those around her, someone others relied on without hesitation. But beneath that strength was a deeply loyal and generous heart. If she believed in you, she would do anything for you.

Above all, she loved her family. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and greatest joy, and she will be missed more than words can express.

In keeping with her wishes, no formal service will be held — and, as she made very clear, no talking about her after she’s gone.

Margarete’s legacy is one of strength, honesty, and a direct, unfiltered spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
