Letter to the editor: A vote for Battle Ground kids and families

Posted

A vote for Jennifer Heine-Withee for the Battle Ground School Board is a vote for kids and for families.

I have known Jennifer for eight years when she first started fighting for Battle Ground parents and their rejection of the high school comprehensive sexual education curriculum known as FLASH.

In 2022, she testified at both the Battle Ground and Hockinson school board meetings about proposed middle school CSE curricula and was instrumental in the implementation of a better alternative for Battle Ground. She has fought for the rights of parents in Olympia, testifying before the House and Senate Education Committees. She led the effort on Referendum 90 in Clark County to repeal the K-12 Comprehensive Sex Ed mandate. She was the state coordinator of WA Parents Right in Education (PRIE). She has traveled around the state speaking to parents groups including as a co-coordinator of the Crisis in Education Summit Series in 2023. She started the Conservative Caucus at the WA State School Directors Association (WSSDA) and was instrumental in eliminating an unfair voting practice, called the weighted vote, at WSSDA General Assembly. She also assisted in the creation of initiative 2181, the Parents Bill of Rights. She worked for the Family Policy Institute of Washington from 2023-2025 as the defender care specialist.

Jennifer has a passion to see the abysmal learning levels of our public school system in core subjects (reading/language arts, science and math) raised to college readiness. She wants to work within the current budget by eliminating unnecessary programs and spending practices. She would like to see more community involvement, classroom volunteers and participation by local businesses in career and technical education.

Jennifer's opponent is the former vice president of the Battle Ground Education Association and is endorsed by the Washington Education Association (WEA). According to Christopher Rufo, a nationally recognized expert, Washington state has the most liberal, progressive teacher’s union in the United States. They support LGBTQ rights, failed diversity equity and inclusion  and restorative justice policies.

The WEA opposes school choice laws where parents have the freedom to choose where their child is educated because the money follows the backpack, and the right of teachers to opt out of joining the teacher's union.
