Letter to the editor: Decline Anti-Trans Initiative

Posted

Current initiative IL26-638 presumes that being LGBTQ+ means something is wrong with a student and that parents need to intervene. Under the guise of restoring “parental rights,” this initiative would require schools to “out” LGBTQ+ students to their parents. But students “out” themselves when and where they feel safe doing so. Those who may not feel safe at home often choose to come out at school.

The only “parental right” this initiative protects is a misinformed parent’s “right” to abuse their LGBTQ+ child in one way or another. Protect kids. Decline to sign IL26-638.
