Letter to the editor: Good Neighbors

Posted

Friday, Nov. 28. My wife, Mary, went out to get our dog.  She was surprised to discover a horse in our meadow. Arnie, a neighbor, knows who owns horses in our area, so Mary called him. He said he would call the owners. He also said to be careful since the horse was skittish. Mary thought, “If I can get him into our fenced back yard, he will be safe.” She tried tempting him with apples, but that did not work. She called Joe and Roxie, two other neighbors. They came over with a rope. Unable to rope the horse, they were successful in getting him into the fenced yard. Arnie tried several times to reach the owners. He left a phone message and walked over to their house to post a note on the door. Four+ hours passed. Finally, the owners got the message and came to claim their horse. Four people interrupted their afternoon plans to keep a wandering horse safe. No one asked about politics or religion. It didn’t matter. There was an animal that needed help, and good neighbors came together to help.
