Not long-ago ICE agents ran over the legs of a man in Vancouver. To say that wasn’t likely to happen at some point is shortsighted. ICE and CBP have a history of acting rashly, detaining first, asking questions later, probable cause be damned.
ICE or Border Control personnel target brown-skinned people for the most part. More than 70% of those detained have not committed a crime. Only 7% of the remainder are considered to be the highest threat level, 4% were of the medium kind and 5% are of the lowest level. (Goldin, Associated Press, 7/12/25). For many, a trip to the grocery store becomes an act of courage. My friends report seeing ICE agents wearing tactical vests and masks in their neighborhoods.
They have reported ICE personnel breaking down doors here in Vancouver.
It becomes important that we support our friends and neighbors. If Marjorie Taylor Greene can change her approach in supporting victims of sex trafficking and vote her conscience, we can change too. We can support mothers, spouses and children of those targeted people. We all have friends and relatives who are included in 70% of non-criminals who have been detained without due process.
Not only that, we can actively support changing ICE regulations to reflect the recent court decision on due process, judicial warrants, and “Cavenaugh stops.” Join me in calling our Congressional Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Senators Cantwell and Murray to let them know how you feel about the abduction of our neighbors and friends. Remember, we were all immigrants once.
