There are many memorable lines from the classic 1969 movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. A couple come from one scene in particular where the two outlaws are riding along together on their horses and talking about future plans.
After listening to Butch’s new idea about going to Bolivia to rob banks, Sundance laughs and says to him, “You just keep on thinkin’, Butch … that’s what you’re good at.”
In response, Cassidy replies, “Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals.”
I thought about that line after reading Kathryn Lassiter’s excellent letter to the editor titled “We must unite to keep our country from sliding into authoritarianism,” in the April 9 issue of The Reflector. Ms. Lassiter offers ample justification for her warning to unite in resisting and opposing Donald Trump’s autocratic actions, which imperil both our democracy and our Constitution.
Her letter provides a brief but comprehensive overview of Trump’s anti-democratic behavior thus far in his second term as president, that becomes a compelling argument for all of us to reject authoritarianism and to protect our democracy.
And remarkably, Ms. Lassiter does this without casting aspersions upon those citizens who, in good faith and with patriotism, may have voted for Donald Trump in the last election.
Thank you for your clear-eyed vision, Ms. Lassiter. You just keep on thinking, Kathryn. That’s what you’re good at.
