Take a look at the local nonpartisan offices section of our local Clark County voter’s pamphlet. It includes candidates running for nonpartisan positions on the Battle Ground School Board. In the pamphlet, candidate Jennifer Heine-Withee writes that she currently works for the Family Policy Institute of Washington (FPIW).
The FPIW is, in fact, very partisan. Its website states this organization is dedicated to advancing “conservative laws” and “advancing biblical values” in Washington public schools.
The website also contains a “strategic plan” for this organization to instill their will in our public schools and includes a map of Washington, each county color-coded shades of blue or red to represent a liberal county or conservative county. The map even includes the number of conservatives, liberals, or “others” living in each county. Individuals who support their strategic plan are called “defenders,” which sounds divisive to me. Go to the FPIW website and see the plan for yourself.
I have no issue with people practicing freedom of religion on their own. That is their right. But I feel partisan politics doesn’t belong in nonpartisan school board elections. I hope you will join me in rejecting Heine-Withee and her partisan politics.
