Letter to the editor: Politics does not get in the way of helping others

Posted

I was all set to respond to a truly partisan political letter. There’s no doubt that my arguments would have been brilliant, but then I decided to do something different. A friend once told me he liked to know what other people are thinking, and I agreed with him. So, I would like to thank Ann Evans (July 19, 2023, Letter) for sharing her thoughts.

As for the rest of you who may not think like me, I would like to thank you for the food on my table, for the power to my house, for the roads and bridges I drive on, for responding to any future emergencies to protect my health and safety, for the care given for my physical and mental health, and my thanks to all those who make my living easy.

The media like to write and talk about the great divide in our country. While I agree that our politics are divisive, I would like to tell you what I see. I see fires and floods, thunderstorms and tornadoes, hail and hurricanes, landslides and earthquakes, scorching heat and freezing cold. I see people helping other people. I do NOT see people asking what political party they belong to or what their beliefs are before they decide to help others. When I see diverse people ignoring their differences and taking care of each other when terrible events happen, it makes me proud to be an American.
